Useful, but very brief and VERY opinionated

As a relative late-comer to Doctor Who fandom (I started watching with the 2005 series), I have long wondered why there seemed to be no concise, definitive guide to the "classic" years of the show. Sure, it's a lot of ground to cover, but I figured SOMEONE out there has seen every episode since 1963.
So, in time for the 50th anniversary, here comes an affordable and highly-portable guide to Doctor Who. From William Hartnell's debut in "An Unearthly Child" up through the 2012 Christmas special, every episode is discussed. Well. . .sort of. The immediate problem one notices is that episode descriptions are typically limited to ONE LINE (For example, the synopsis for "The Edge of Destruction" merely offers, "The TARDIS appears to be under alien control. . ." Really, that's it). A line or two of "Observations" follow, ranging from helpful (such as why a story ended up being 3 parts instead of four) to superfluous, (such as noting things like "William Russell was on holiday for the filming of episodes 4 and 5"). A highly-subjective critical comment follows. Of course, every fan might have differences of opinion here, but I for one disagreed with Mr. Campbell's comments more often than not (a 2 out of 10 for "The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe". . .really?).
Still, for those of us who are playing catch-up via the broad range of DVD's out there, the guide is somewhat useful. I've only seen maybe 3 John Pertwee stories ever, so at least I can be slightly better informed when deciding what to get. I can only hope that, since 2013 is shaping up to be the biggest year ever for Doctor Who, someone is out there right now working on a more comprehensive guide. Some pictures would be nice, too. :-)
In the meantime, don't let the author's oddly negative attitude about the show's future discourage you. Doctor Who is now bigger than ever, and I don't think it's going anywhere for a long time.

Good overview for fans of the show

This book is not for those who are fanatics of the show who need in-depth analysis of each episode. It is a general review of the seasons and episodes from the beginning of the series until print time. It has just enough info necessary about each episode (cast, crew, plot, tidbits of trivia) to make a fan like me satisfied.
