Four New Mysteries Amidst the fog covered alleys and byways of London, murder and mayhem run rampant. Here is another quartet of unique, perplexing cases that will challenge this noble duo and test their fortitude and courage. Why would someone murder an old man a few months before his hundredth birthday? Why is Holmes’ arch nemesis, Prof. Moriarty, hunting the city for the same sadistic killer Holmes is after? And, when the Great Detective is arrested and imprisoned for attempting to seduce the wife of a wealthy nobleman, Watson questions whether his friend has finally lost his mind. Within these pages, writers Chuck Miller, Aaron Smith, I.A. Sincerely Hope More Volumes Are In the Works!

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective Volume V

This is the latest book in this exciting on-going series from Airship 27

First of all comes “The Adventure of the Other Man”, from the pen of Chuck Miller.

Scandal in Baker Street! Sherlock Holmes has been seen kissing a married woman! He has also threatened her husband in a public tirade on the couple’s own property! And Lestrade has no recourse but to toss a drunken Holmes in gaol.

Why is the detective acting so strangely? Why does Watson believe Holmes is guilty, based on Holmes’ past? The reader will have to discover all of that for his or her self. I feel I have said too much already, but not really as this occurs within the first few pages of the story. Solid five out of five for this engaging tale.

Next we encounter “The Adventure of the Stolen Centennial” by Aaron Smith.

A man who is seeking to live to be 100 is cut short by poisoning one month from the actual birthday. His closest friend near the same age is suspected, but the poison is an extremely rare concoction known as “Blue Eternity.” At stake seems to be a map of a hidden treasure somewhere in the interior of Peru.

What could make a man who has been friends with the victim for over sixty years to kill him? Was he coerced? Was he mad? Was he avenging an old injury? The reader will find the answers in this exciting story. Another solid five for five! Excellent!

Third on the list is the IA Watson story, “The Abominable Merridew.” This story is mentioned by Dr Watson in “The Adventure of the Empty House.”

The story is told in journals of Sebastian Moran relating the finding of Professor Moriarty and the writings of Dr Watson recording Holmes side of the problem.

Many criminals have been tracked down by Holmes and Watson, some of them extremely depraved. But what could be so bad about Merridew that even Colonel Moran calls him an “abomination?”

The story winds through a maze of espionage, murder, and a storyline masterful in its excellence. Somehow an old woman who gives abortions, Moriarty, Moran, an old locksmith, Watson, Holmes and Merridew all come together in this page turner the reader won’t want to lay down before finishing it! On a scale of five this story rates a ten!

The book winds up on the Andrew Salmon tale, “The Adventure of the Invisible Assassin.”

Sherlock Holmes is dying. Investigating the death of a cabinet minister, he has been caught in a fire and suffers from smoke inhalation, but instead of getting better, he gets worse. Something was hidden in that smoke; something invisible that now has Holmes’ life endangered.

This story is a classic romp of espionage, the Foreign Office, Mycroft Holmes, old and new enemies and winds the volume up on a definite high note. Solid five out of five story.

Of all five volumes of The Consulting Detective Series, I recommend this as the best.

A quality collection of Holmes and Watson stories.
By Shawn M. Vogt
This is the second e-book that I have purchased by Airship 27 Productions, the first being Brother Bones: The Undead Avenger. Neither has disappointed me in the slightest. I loved Sherlock Holmes and John Watson growing up, and this collection is definitely one to read for a lover of the consulting detective and his friend. Starting out with "The Adventure of the Other Man" by Chuck Miller, we find Sherlock is in dire straits, and is acting decidedly unlike himself. Seemingly caught up by a passion for another man's wife, Holmes has been jailed for causing a row at the home of the married couple. Something seems off, doesn't it? This is not the usual actions we have come to expect from the Great Detective. Rest assured, there is an underlying reason, and a masterful plan involved in these events. This story fleshes out a bit of Sherlock's history, and shows that he does, indeed, have emotions underlying his steely willpower, and his highly logical view of the world. Watson is showcased in a favorable light, which he well deserves, being Sherlock's greatest friend and confidante. I really dislike when he is shown as hapless buffoon, which I have encountered in other takes on Sir Arthur's creations occasionally, and love the writer's portrayal of the friendship between these two men. A number of old friend's and enemies appear or are mentioned in the story, and it helps both ground, and expand, the universe as a whole. All in all, a good story to open the collection. The second tale "The Adventure of the Stolen Centennial" by Aaron Smith, utterly entertained me, from the opening paragraph, to the very end. I felt that I could have been reading a lost tale of Doyle's, newly rediscovered and published. The characters, atmosphere, and the underlying problem and it's solution, all hit perfect notes. It fits nicely into canon, and has the two men behaving as they should; as themselves, not as hollow shells written by someone trying to cash in upon their legend. Once again, old friends and enemies enter into the tale. Highly recommended, this story is tied for my favorite tale from this collection. Thank you, Aaron Smith! Moving to the third, "The Abominable Merridew" by I.A. Watson... I'm not sure what to say. This story totally satisfied me, and went way beyond that feeling. I'd like to admit that the opening part of the novel had me totally fooled, and I'd like to give a loud "Cheers!" to the author for that. Totally grounded in canon, and expanding upon a offhand remark by Holmes in one of the original tales, I think this is an utter delight. Writing the story from two viewpoints, the extremely abominable villain, and the mind games between two masters in the story make this an outstanding tale. Drawing in other familiar characters, and the way in which the plan seemingly goes off course, and the resolution, puts this over the top. Extremely high quality, I would feel satisfied if this was the only story in the collection, my money and time would have been well spent. Now on to the last "The Adventure of the Invisible Assassin" by Andrew Salmon. The satisfaction that I had felt with the previous story is definitely continued with this tale. The theme of the two opposite, yet perfectly matched friends continues, and draws in others close to the pair. Not wanting to include spoilers in my review, the story starts out as a seemingly simplistic case, which quickly becomes much, much more. At first, I thought this would be a good, but not great, recounting of one of the Great Detective's cases... I was wrong. It became much more involved as I read through it. It has ties to the story preceding it, and also to a story by Sir Arthur. Without the interventions of known friends, Sherlock may have well not completed this case. A very nice story to close out the collection. By story, my ratings are 4, 5, 5, and 5 stars. The afterwords by the authors are interesting, and the illustrations are good. Overall, an extremely high quality offering, recommended to anyone who loves good fiction, regardless of type.

Continuing Excellence
By Drstatz
Airship Productions are labeled as 'Pulp Fiction For A New Generation.' Prior to reading some of the Holmes/Watson offerings, the term 'Pulp Fiction conjured up trashy, poorly-written drivel. My mind has been totally changed. The stories are created by individuals who are obviously at the top of their games. They succeed in taking the reader back to the England of the time with all of the horrors existing then while weaving in taut, crackling plots that keep the reader glued to the pages.

In other reviews I have noted that for the most part the Holmes/Watson stories available tend to be pretty good. Others, to my mind, are sufficiently excellent that all i need see is a particular writer's name and the offering goes into the shopping cart without further ado. The Airship27 Hanger books are now in that category and I anxiously await the next offerings.
