A treat for musical theatre lovers

Kander and Ebb's autobiography Colored Lights, while a fine glimpse into their creative process, is not nearly as informative and interesting as this book. Thoroughly analyzing and covering their work for the theatre and creating unique portraits of each man (Kander being the warm, loving one and Ebb being acerbic and brash), this is a must read for musical theatre lovers!

Kander and Ebb book a bust

When I purchased this book, I thought it would be more about the lives of the composers; more of their background, their experiences in greater detail, stories that told of their interaction with the directors and actors in their shows. Instead, this book reads like a music theory text-book; modalities, raising and lowering of scale degrees, vamp examples, etc. It took a lot of self-motivation to get from cover to cover. And the spelling errors and typos are too many to mention. Shame on the editors! Wait for a better book to come along about this fascinating team.

Well-written, well-researched and revelatory in many ways. This book is a necessity for anyone interested in Musical Theatre. A perfect example of how to examine a Musical Theatre writer's career (in this case writers'). One of the very best books I have read on Musical Theatre.

Good Story

Georgie and Nina are best friends with one major difference. Georgie has long known she never wants kids and relishes the freedom that life choice brings. Nina on the other hand wants nothing more than to be a mother. Married for several years she and her husband have endured the rollercoaster of IVF with no success and it has taken its toll on their relationship. Deciding that she can't go through the torturous process again Nina and Georgie go out drinking one night and with her inhibitions lowered Nina asks her friend if she will be her surrogate.

Nobody is more surprised than Georgie herself when she reluctantly agrees to do the ultimate favour for her best friend. But as often happens in life things don't go quite as smoothly as planned, leading the two women on a journey that tests their friendship and teaches them surprising things about themselves. Georgie is hard to like at times and I can't say I really grew to enjoy her character. I don't know that she was as fully developed as she could have been, although she was realistic enough.

Although She's Having Her Baby explores the heartbreaking theme of infertility it does so in a way that includes many light hearted and humorous moments. Those who have been through pregnancy will relate to the cravings and unwelcome changes it brings to your body and those who haven't will gain some insight into what it is all about. The description of some of the mothers in the playground is funny but perhaps a little cliched.

All in all this is an enjoyable story with some surprising plot twists that kept it more interesting than the blurb suggests. I will say I enjoyed it more as it went along. The writing is good with an engaging style and the dialogue is natural and authentic for the characters. I also enjoyed the contemporary Australian setting. It is a promising debut for Lauren Sams and will no doubt appeal to those who enjoy an engaging chick lit novel.

Such a fab debut novel, funny and heartwarming. Ms Sam deals with a heart rending topic with a deft, light touch, the dialogue and characters fairly spring to life on the pages. Look forward to reading more from this clever new voice.

About the Author

Karl Drlica, Ph.D. is a Principal Investigator at the Public Health Research Institute and Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the UMDNJ–New Jersey Medical School in Newark. His laboratory focuses on fluoroquinolone action and resistance with Mycobacteriun tuberculosis and other bacteria, including approaches for slowing the enrichment and amplification of resistant bacterial subpopulations.

David S. Perlin, Ph.D. is Executive Director of the Public Health Research Institute and UMDNJ Regional Biocontainment Laboratory, as well as Professor of Microbiology & Molecular Genetics at the New Jersey Medical School in Newark. He is also a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Perlin’s laboratory explores mechanisms of antifungal drug-resistance, rapid detection of drug resistant bloodstream pathogens in high-risk patients, and the application of small-animal models for the study of respiratory pathogens.

readable for a layman. too fundamental for experts

Having finished the book in one sitting, I flipped back to the preface in search of what its targeted audience is. It was "initially drafted to supplement studies of infectious disease" and the authors later "aim to make the principles of antibiotic use and effectiveness available to a large audience: farmers, hospital administrators.....and especially individual users."

The book's content and style of writing serves well for the above targeted audience. The book is suitable for use at a high school or college freshman year level as a supplement. Interesting historical facts and social ramifications interspersed throughout the book. The book is light on the academic or theoretical side of it, probably intentionally so. It touches on biological mechanisms just enough to make a layman understand what they want to tell next, nothing more. Nonetheless, this book is a laudable attempt to educate the public about the subject.

Antibiotic Use: Cause and Effect

The authors outline and explain a problem that is not new but is starting to be brought into the public light. This book is written for people who use antibiotics and is written at an introductory yet clear level. The paramedics, farmers, hospital administrators and especially the public at large should read this book. If you do not have a background in basic biology the authors have included two appendix that give the basic background required to understand the rest of the text and I would recommend starting there.

The book is well presented on how the medical and agricultural use of antibiotics and their misuse has lead to pathogens mutating and becoming antibiotic resistance. And at present dosage and actually overuse of antibiotics will lead to a pathogen that will cause a pandemic. When is not discussed but when you read that rate at which the resistance strain mutate and spread it seems that this should be a subject of high priority. Yet pharmaceutical companies have been shutting down their antibiotic research division for it is not cost effective for them to continue.

The book is informative and not an alarmist manifesto. It covers the facts of use and history of antibiotics and present day measures. And proposes how we may be able to stop this path to a super resistant pathogen; a term not used by the authors. Most people know that the effectiveness of any type of drug diminishes with use and in low dosage the pathogens themselves become resistant. In order to rectify this situation will take a change of culture for all involved; farmers, medical professionals and moist important the general public. At present the authors show that all we are doing at present to slow down the spread and creation of antibiotic resistant pathogens is to increase dosage levels. These increased dosages may have more side effects but avoid the spread of the resistant pathogens.

I highly recommend that this book be read by medical practitioner, farmers and anyone who uses antibiotics. This is a very easy and interesting read.

Antibiotic resistance is the ability of a microorganism to withstand the effects of an antibiotic.
Antibiotic resistance evolves naturally via natural selection through random mutation, but it could also be engineered by applying an evolutionary stress on a population. Antibiotic resistance is a consequence of evolution via natural selection.

Once such a gene is generated, bacteria can then transfer the genetic information in a horizontal fashion (between individuals) by plasmid exchange. "Antibiotic Resistance: Understanding And Responding To An Emerging Crisis" explains the concept of multiresistant organisms (aka; a "Superbug").

Bacteria which have a mutation allowing them to survive antibiotic intervention will live on to reproduce; passing on this resistance to their offspring in the next generation

Drlica & Perlin point out that the patterns of antibiotic usage greatly affect the number of resistant organisms which develop. Overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as second- and third-generation cephalosporins, greatly hastens the development of methicillin resistance.

Other factors contributing towards resistance include incorrect diagnosis, unnecessary prescriptions, improper use of antibiotics by patients, and the use of antibiotics as livestock food additives for growth promotion.

The book has the classic hallmarks of becoming a desktop reference for the clinician and those interested in new emerging bio-hazardous threats. I found the glossary very helpful and also the "light" and playful arrangement of facts an figures made the book enjoyable NOT another bland, boring "for scientists only". The layout reminded me of the "... For Dummies" and "The Complete Idiot's Guide To..." books. Which is a good thing. Comprehension of materials is the main point. No use having very dry, stuffy and hard to read or follow books ... which end up covered in dust and cobwebs for their unreadability.

You will LOVE this story!!!

I absolutely LOVE this story! It's colorful, funny, clever, uplifting and entertaining, packed full of powerful life messages for everyone ... simple enough young children can understand, yet profound enough adults can learn and grow!

I can so relate to God's Little Snowball, Esbee ... his thinking & reasoning, his fears, his dilemmas, his choices, his feelings of inadequacy & self-defeat ... his story helped me recognize just how easily I can "roll" down the wrong path when I rely on my own understanding, my own needs, my own strength and seek my own desires, instead of seeking God first as my Guide, in all things.

The story's not preachy, yet it gently and effectively spoke to my heart, motivating me to look at my own life and choices. I was incredibly uplifted and encouraged as I watched Esbee grow up in character as he discovers who he is and what God's purpose & plans are for his life, as well as having the joy of watching Esbee begin to recognize, believe and receive God's unconditional love and grace! What a positive and healthy message to share with kids, not to mention affirm in all of us!!!

I really like how the author formatted the book ... there's a page at the end of each section with two, simple questions. The questions invite you to process the lessons you've just read about, then apply it to your life. What a wonderful tool for parents and kids to discuss and share what they're learning!

Love this book!

This book is a great book for the whole family. It's colorful, easy, and fun for kids to learn about God....yet it also has deeper meanings that adults will enjoy and ponder. It could be used as both a Sunday School book for kids or a book study for adults. It's one of those books that the more you read it, the more you'll notice the many teachings. There is so much meaning packed into this cute book!

What a unique book to reach a wide variety of ages. The events of Esbee rolling down the mountain really help paint a picture reflective of choices we all make. There is a page after each section containing two questions. This page helped open up dialog in new ways. I'm so thankful for this book. What a great tool to teach kids about choices, confronting fears and for those times when we all feel like we've been a disappointment. Personally, I got a lot out of the books messages. A great story!

Brilliant evocation of sea journey to Australia 1800s

I can't recall another first person narrative that is so effective in giving (apparent) authentic voice to a character as that given by Mr Golding to the young aristocrat Mr Edmund Talbot and how revealing that is of the times, the class system, dress, morality, habits, and so on, on a long sea voyage. Details of the ship itself, the characters that people it, and the events that occasion it on its journey, are masterfully drawn (so that's where - some of us - came from!) I also laughed out loud as it is richly comic as well (Dickens would have laughed out loud too I bet!) not least in the circumlocutions used by the narrator. A journey for him in a number of senses. Also one of the funniest lovemaking scenes I can recall ever having read. A joy of a novel.

Stands on its own effortlessly . . .

It's the tail end of the Napoleonic wars and a superannuated warship makes its way very, very slowly from England to Australia. Among the passengers are Mr. Edmund Talbot, aristocrat, headed for a term as assistant to the Governor, thanks to the influence of his patron and godfather. He keeps a journal for the latter's eventual entertainment and we are treated to his stumbling attempts to understand the nautical world. Still, he's a gentleman and that smooths his way. He has various small adventures, social and amorous, all of it lighthearted to the reader. then we meet the Rev. Mr. Colley, newly frocked and headed for his first congregation, and a very different sort of personality from Talbot, not to mention the ship's officers and men. And from there the story begins a slide into a much darker place, culminating in the "rite" of Crossing the Line, when Mr. Colley is humiliated once too often, and subsequent events result in a funeral at sea. Golding has absolute control of his subject and his characters, sucking you into a consideration of the nature of Justice, and of the division between the social orders. This is not at all a "fun" book, but it's a very affecting one.

Helen delivers again!

Possession is the third book in the Steel Brothers Saga by Helen Hardt. You should read Craving first and then Obsession to enjoy the drama and romance!

The story of Jade and Talon continues in full force and more secrets are revealed. Talon is trying hard to overcome the terrors of his past, but isn’t sure he can share the events that have shaped him into the man he is today with Jade. What will Jade say/do when she finds out? This is Talon’s biggest question AND fear.

Jade is experiencing some obstacles in her personal and professional life as well. Are they connected somehow or is it all just coincidence?!?! Their lives seem to be more and more intertwined.

Even with life being thrown at them from all directions, the chemistry and devotion they have for one another is undeniable. Their romantic encounters are so hot and sexy!

There are still questions that need to be answered and more to be discovered with Jade, Talon and the rest of the Steel Family. I’m sure the ups and downs for this family are far from over. I can only imagine what intense, nailing biting, juicy things Helen has in store for us with Melt. If you like a hot, steamy romance with mystery and a suspenseful “who done it” that keeps you wanting more, this is the series for you! Helen does not disappoint!

Sweet Possession!!!

This is the third book in the Steel Brothers series, and after devouring Craving, and Obsession, I was more than ready for Possession! Helen Hardt did not disappoint with this third book! The emotional journey that Jade and Talon began in Craving culminates in Possession. While many questions are answered, new questions are introduced that will continue with Melt. The loving healing journey between Jade and Talon is just beautiful. The loving sex is steamy. The writing is fabulous and I adored Possession! Their evolution from falling in love, and then for Talon to be able to tell Jade he loves her is incredible. Talon gets therapy for the sexual, physical, and emotional abuse he endured as a ten year old boy, and we get to see characters from the previous books.While there is intensity and darkness in this series, there is sweet love and redemption with healing which is very powerful! And while Jade and Talon profess their love to each other, there is still more to come in the mystery of the final person responsible for Talon's abuse. Cannot wait to see what happens in Melt!

This book was amazing. It was full of emotions that had you up and down throughout. The love between Jade and Talon just keeps getting hotter and hotter and just goes to show you how having the right person in your life can affect it.......With Jade being in Talon's life (giving him the feel of completion) and with the help of the shrink, Talon is able to open up to everyone about what happened to him 25 years ago. He has also found out that even with all of this that had happened in his life, that love is stronger than anything that he has ever faced. The conclusion of this book will leave with your jaw dropped, and you mind going "OMG OMG OMG"........This series is one that I am so glad that I found and I will definitely suggest that everyone read this book. If you loved 50 Shades, you will just fall in love with Talon and Jade.
