Custom looks with your crochet hooks

Since there isn't a 'Look Inside' for this book, I listed the contents with comments along the way:

CLASSIC CONSTRUCTION
Cranberry Cardigan (uses a diamond lattice stitch pattern, cute and well, classic!)
Summer Sky Vest (done in beautiful blue, professional looking trim)
Foliage Shrug (really like this one, beautiful cables on the front, could easily be lengthened to be more of a cardigan)
Burnt Plaid Dress (this is actually very cool, the 'plaid' look is functional as it holds the dress's shape)

TOP-DOWN AND IN-THE-ROUND CONSTRUCTION
Magnolia Tank (Egyptian looking around the collar, not flowery like magnolias, uses bamboo yarn for the fabric's drape)
Smoky Cropped Top (shell pattern and front post stitches create shapely lines, lower part of sleeves and top frill out)
Rose Quartz Pullover (lovely, delicate looking, yet something one could wear any day of the year)
Structured Cardigan (this is cool, done with pretty flowers on one side of the front edge)

GRANNY MOTIF CONSTRUCTION
Harvest Cowl Shift (interesting top with a cowl neck, along with very open motifs)

UNIQUE CONSTRUCTION
Clover Car coat (this looks more like a short sleeve aryan sweater to me, lots of cable work)
Stormy Lace Tunic (very pretty crossover tunic, lace stitch)
Veronica Pullover (cover sweater, combination of stitches shapes lower torso well)
Walnut Berry V-Neck (classic cardigan look, open lace work, all done in one piece)

These are some serious patterns, some up to 12 pages long (the top down ones are around 6 pages). They do contain many lovely photos, sizes up to 2X, stitch charts, and very detailed schematics, all of which contribute to the length. True to a creative crochet endeavor, many different types of stitches are used throughout, not just double crochet. The author used a good variety of accessible yarn and lists all the yardage so you can easily substitute. I do wish the book would lay flat though. With time and use, that should change.

This book isn't about creating your own design from scratch (although after making a few of these items, you certainly could run with the concepts). It IS about the creativity 'within' the pattern itself. Each finished product surely does have a custom look about it. This isn't a book for beginners or for someone wanting a quick project. These will take time, but the effort will be rewarded with some lovely results.

A book that takes the mystery out of making sweaters with a crochet hook!

2) Explains each technique in great detail
3) Special stitches and how to incorp them into designs
4) How to read a chart
5) Buttonholes

All the above explained in great detail and more

1) Some ofthe designs are very much neutral for me liking or disliking but the book shows how to change them so could be considered a Pro

I can not see one con other than book construction and binding being crafter unfriendly but that is the publisher's fault not the author, so no Cons

What a Joy

This is my second favorite book by Robyn Chachula (first being TEACH YOURSELF VISUALLY). The photos are gorgeous! Again you get the symbols, photos, written instructions, and diagrams. But this book is about construction. ALL about construction. Top-down, one piece, bottom up, rounds, rows, granny motifs and a section on "unique construction". Some of her combinations are truly inspired, like a lace top with a heavy cowl collar worked as granny motifs, then joined. My favorite has to be the "Burnt Plaid Dress" worked from the bottom up to the shoulders. Yes, I said plaid.
Tips throughout, symbols, abbreviations and illustrations, written stitch directions all handily placed at the book. It is so well put together, but then what would you expect from a structural engineer?

Very interesting book on anatomy and evolution

I read page after page. I was at the last page when I recongnized.

This book is a cream of crops which came out from years of dedicated work by an outstanding researcher and educator of anatomy and evolution.

There are many traditional anatomy books which explain structure but sometimes readers were not satisfied with questions not explained by the books. Dr. Langdon faithfully applied sciences related with human evolution and explains human body structure and function from the unique perspectives of evolution.

If combined with traditional clinical purpose anatomy books, you will have very clear and precise understanding of anatomy.

I had the benefit of being one of Dr. Langdon's students many years ago.

The depth of his understanding of anatomy is difficult to fathom.

He never used a single note to guide his teachings. He didn't need them. He was capable of drawing any structure throughout its evolutionary development from memory.

The Navy's Perfect Storm

This is a superb book about the heroism of a Navy patrol plane crew that goes down in the midst of a raging north Pacific storm, and the men who dare the elements to rescue them. A well know story within naval aviation, it is thrilling to read this riveting account, and it is great to know that many others will have the opportunity to learn this tragic yet uplifting tale. I first heard this story from one of the survivors who visited my squadron many years ago, and it dramaticly affected the way I look at my job. I recommend it to everyone.

These guys are heroes.....

As the son of a Navy P-3 (and sea plane) pilot and former CO of VP-9, this book hit very close to home for me. The story is well-written and extremely emotional, at least to anyone who has ever had a loved one fly in harm's way. When you're a kid, and your Dad flies Navy planes for a living, you never really consider the risks and dangers. This true story demonstrates what these men faced on a daily basis and shows how their endless training and attention to detail was essential to their survival. You wouldn't expect a Navy flyer turned author to write a tear jerker, but that is certainly what Andy Jampoler has done, at least for me. Thinking back on all those flights, all those deployments, all those "close" calls with engine failure, and realizing that it could have been my family welcoming back a box instead of a father, there simply is no way not to shed a tear of both sorrow and thanks. The men of PD-2 were heroes in the traditional sense; they did their jobs in the face of incredible danger, some losing their lives in the process. But for me, what this book really shows is that tragedy doesn't make heroes. For every Jerry Grigsby, Ed Caylor and John Ball, there were thousands of other Navy officers and men who were just a much heroes. In this time of war, it's important to remember that.

When you were there...the book takes on a new meaning.

I was a mechanic with VP-9 when PD-02 went down off of the coast of Russia and went on to become a flight engineer with the Golden Eagles and had the opportunity to fly with Ed Caylor on a number of occasions. I knew most of the crew members personally and most all of the other people mentioned in the book. I was very young when we lost 5 of our crew members in the Pacific and the event had a huge impact on me. The book is very accurate and well written. It's great reading for aviation buff's and a must read for anyone that was part of VP-9.

Knowledge is Power!

My daughter was diagnosed with many different mental disorders before a doctor figured out she had BPD. Then from there was many different and failed medicines that caused more pain than help. Finally when I saw this on Amazon I saw a ray of hope. This workbook is pivotal in changing my daughter's chances of living as normal as one can with BPD. It helps you see why you do what you do, why you want to do what you do and how you can overcome those defining moments. Counseling is expensive and we can't always afford it, but this workbook has opened doors for my daughter and brought a welcomed knowledge. An important tool, along with meds, some counseling and prayer she WILL overcome. Thank you!

I love how this book lets you write down your own experiences and the problem with borderline personality disorder. For a friend helping a friend, this is a really Great and Helpful Workbook for Yourself, or a friend.

About the Author
John Boardman, Lincoln Professor Emeritus of Classical Archaeology and Art at Oxford University, has written widely on the art and archaeology of ancient Greece. His previous books include The Greeks Overseas, The History of Greek Vases, The World of Ancient Art, and others.

Very small format and photos are all black and white

Expected this book to be in a larger format. This is tiny so makes it difficult to read. Also, all photos are in black and white so again it's an issue of being readable. I am sending this back.

Greek Sculpture

This is a great book with a ton of information. It is a sequel to the other 2 books in the series of Greek Sculpture. It covers many different aspects of style, origin, and techniques, etc. of the sculpture work. It also includes a index of illustrations and index of artists in the back of the book so you can look up specific works. It also has a general index.
