The Cathers and the Tarot of Marseilles
By Bonnie Cehovet
"The Secret of the Tarot" (and the Tarot holds many secrets!)is an interesting take on the Marseilles Tarot, and whether the story of the Cathers (a heretical religious group from the 13th century)is concealed within it. Divided into two parts, the first part concerns itself with the history of the Cathars, the Roman Catholic Church, the Albigensian Crusade and the development of the Tarot. The second part concerns the Major Arcana of the Marseilles Tarot (specifically, the Nicholas Conver Tarot), and attempts to show where the imagery in the cards can be connected to specific individuals or families within the Cathar tradition.

The book is well written, and well documented. As with all books of this nature, it reflects the beliefs of the author as to the subject matter. Readers may agree with some of his findings, and disagree with others. They will be exposed to a specific line of thought, one that is well foot-noted, and with a significant bibliography for further study.

For anyone interested in the Cathar tradition, the Marseilles tradition,or the specific Nicholas Conver Marseilles deck, this book is a worthwhile read.

Fascinating Historical Speculation
By Wil Welsh
Whether you're interested in the Tarot in general or in the history of the waning days of the crusades, this book is a must read! Thoroughly researched and documented, but clear and easy reading in its style, this is about as thorough an account as you'll find in such a condensed form.
This book is divided into two sections, 1) The history of the Albigensian Crusades and the persecution of the Cathars in the south of France conducted by the Catholic church from 1198 for approximately 50 years; 2) A card-by-card analysis of the Tarol of Marseilles revealing the hidden and symbolic messages of the history and philosophy of the Cathars.
In straight forward and non-pedantic prose, the author unveils the shocking atrocities of the Church in persecuting the Cathars (and other sects they identified as "heretics") primarily because their appeal to the masses began to erode the church's power (or perceived power). In their simple, non-material, spiritual pursuits, it seems the Cathars were more spiritual than the representatives of the Church, from the Pope on down to the local clergy. People admired them and were attracted to their idea of living simple lives and relating directly to God with no need for an intermediary (such as the Church).
When the Cathars were either killed or driven away, the author speculates that it was natural that those who survived clandestinely would find a way to remember their history, the atrocities committed against them, and the Cathar philosophy. The author argues persuasively that the Tarot of Marseilles, altered in subtle ways from earlier tarot decks, may have been used to perpetuate Cathar purposes under the very nose of the Church.
The research and detail in this book is impressive. I have to say that the preponderance of evidence Mr. Swiryn presents leaves little doubt that the Tarot of Marseilles offers more than parlor-game amusement!
I highly recommend this book.

Unraveling the Riddle of the Tarot
By Fulgour Prentice

* * * * *

Robert Swiryn's thought-provoking book "The Secret of the Tarot" is the incredible story of how the Cathars, a group of thirteenth century religious heretics targeted for destruction by the Roman Catholic Church and the King of France, may have managed to preserve their history and spiritual messages in the images of the Tarot of Marseilles.

Well researched and richly illustrated "The Secret of the Tarot" presents a riveting look at the fate of the Cathars following the Albigensian Crusade and the Inquisition, as it offers a fresh perspective of the meaning of the Tarot.

Both a visionary exploration of the Tarot's imagery and a look at the story of a people who refused to let their legacy be lost, this book could forever change the way you look at medieval history and the Tarot.

From Publishers Weekly
This scholarly, absorbing history of dress, an updated edition of a 1966 reference work, ranges from prehistoric costume through present fashion. From antiquity to the 14th century, costume was generally long, loose and draped, not nationalistic in character, and reflected magical and religious functions. From the 14th century, when costume became short and fitted, to the 19th century, clothing acquired personal and national characteristics. The third fashion phase, under the influence of industrial mass-production and European expansionism, beginning in the mid-19th century and continuing to the present, is less personal and more international, although there are also exclusive haute-couture designs for moneyed clientele. Readers will delight in the superior 1188 illustrations, including 356 full-color plates, that feature a bell-shaped, skirted terracotta idol from the eighth century B.C., sixth century B.C. funerary stele of the warrior Ariston, late 13th century Sicilian silk cloth, 17th century Rubens and Van Dyck and 19th century Renoir portraits, and a 1965 Saint Laurent minidress. The late Boucher and Deslandres were director and assistant, respectively, of the French Center for Costume Studies.

A great place to start
By Suzanne E. Mcbroom
This thick reference book will look great on your coffee table... I've referenced it more times than I can count- if you are interested in historical costuming, this is a must have for a jumping point to do more research. It shows an overview of history through fashion, though I must admit the reading didn't draw me in, despite several attempts to drudge through it. More than anything, this book is full of copies of primary and secondary sources- both photographs of museum artifacts and details of paintings and sculptures. It has some nice information on Egyptian and Roman fashion in the beginning, but other than that its primary focus is on Anglo-Saxon oriented fashion. It must be stressed that this book is not an end all and be all when it comes to the word on fashion- though it provides a useful and generalized overview, and it may happen to have what you are looking for, it does completely ignore some very important years/fashions (example: Tudor, late 1400-mid 1500s! ). Caveat emptor, more for art fans and theatre costumers than die hard history buffs, but overall a good buy.

Excellent overview, beatiful illustrations
By A Customer
I recommend this book primarily for those wanting a good overview of a very long period of time and for the beautiful pictures, many of which are in colour. However, especially for the periods before 1500, there often are simply not enough illustrations to accurately portray the changes in fashion during these years, and the text tends to focus on French fashion almost exclusively. I've also discovered errors in descriptions of styles by as much as a century and a half--best to ignore the text and make your own analysis based on the illustrations themselves, which are all contemporary sources, not modern interpretations or redrawing. A very good resource book for any costume library.

A "must" for anyone interested in the history of clothing.
By A Customer
20,000 Years of Fashion is one of the best general overviews of the history of clothing. It is full of many beautiful color prints that are lovely to look at, and they are all considered "primary resource". Primary resources are paintings, drawings, statuary, or any art from that specific period. It is considered to be the most reliable and accurate depictions of what was worn (and even these are subject to interpretation). This is in contrast to this same artwork redrawn today. A good example of this are the really beautiful books of medieval costuming done during the Victorian era, such as those by Rascinet. The illustrations are redrawn from medieval paintings. They are beautiful color illustrations - but totally inaccurate. You can see the Victorian influence and mindset in their drawings. 20,000 Years of Fashion brings a general overview of clothing history and how it was influenced by its environment. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading about clothing history or anyone just looking for a lovely book of pretty pictures.

Tsukiji: The Fish Market at the Center of the World, by Theodore C. Bestor

Located only blocks from Tokyo's glittering Ginza, Tsukiji—the world's largest marketplace for seafood—is a prominent landmark, well known but little understood by most Tokyoites: a supplier for countless fishmongers and sushi chefs, and a popular and fascinating destination for foreign tourists. Early every morning, the worlds of hi-tech and pre-tech trade noisily converge as tens of thousands of tons of seafood from every ocean of the world quickly change hands in Tsukiji's auctions and in the marketplace's hundreds of tiny stalls. In this absorbing firsthand study, Theodore C. Bestor—who has spent a dozen years doing fieldwork at fish markets and fishing ports in Japan, North America, Korea, and Europe—explains the complex social institutions that organize Tsukiji's auctions and the supply lines leading to and from them and illuminates trends of Japan's economic growth, changes in distribution and consumption, and the increasing globalization of the seafood trade. As he brings to life the sights and sounds of the marketplace, he reveals Tsukiji's rich internal culture, its place in Japanese cuisine, and the mercantile traditions that have shaped the marketplace since the early seventeenth century.

From the Inside Flap
"Bestor's vivid and meticulous study of Tokyo's seafood market is at once perhaps the best description we have of a modern, large-scale commodity bazaar, an important contribution to comparative economics, and a powerful analysis of the everyday workings of Japanese culture. As a portrait of a master institution in a complex society, Tsukiji represents a major advance in the anthropological description of contemporary life."—Clifford Geertz, author of The Interpretation of Cultures

"This is, quite simply, a masterpiece of ethnography and a jewel of a book. It will prove immediately popular and influential."—William W. Kelly, Professor of Anthropology, Yale University

"Bestor's rich portrait of Tsukiji is set within the larger frame of Tokyo's urban history, helping us see clearly the forces which, over time, resulted in the creation of the world's greatest seafood market. An impressive amount of ethnographic fieldwork turns his fascination with Tsukiji into a first-rate piece of anthropological analysis. The reader will see Tokyo's colossal fish emporium through Bestor's eyes, far better than we could ever see it with our own."—Sidney Mintz, author of Sweetness and Power and Tasting Food, Tasting Freedom

"This study is a fine example of how key local institutions both drive and reflect larger national and global processes. In showing us the global reach of a major seafood market in Japan, Bestor is able to bring the best practices of ethnography to the abstractions of the economy, thus deepening our sense of how money, commodities, risk and drudgery meet to produce a specific - and brilliantly evoked - cultural economy. This is a rare book, full of treats for both the specialist and the general reader. "—Arjun Appadurai, author of Modernity at Large

"Bestor's vivid and meticulous study of Tokyo's seafood market is at once perhaps the best description we have of a modern, large-scale commodity bazaar, an important contribution to comparative economics, and a powerful analysis of the everyday workings of Japanese culture. As a portrait of a master institution in a complex society, Tsukiji represents a major advance in the anthropological description of contemporary life."--Clifford Geertz, author of "The Interpretation of Cultures

"This is, quite simply, a masterpiece of ethnography and a jewel of a book. It will prove immediately popular and influential."--William W.

The reader will see Tokyo's colossal fish emporium through Bestor's eyes, far better than we could ever see it with our own."--Sidney Mintz, author of "Sweetness and Power and "Tasting Food, Tasting Freedom

This is a rare book, full of treats for both thespecialist and the general reader. "--Arjun Appadurai, author of "Modernity at Large

An essential reference for for food lovers going to Tokyo
By RJF in Illinois
I am not an anthropologist or a foodie who is steeped in the industry. But I did go to Tokyo for 4 days with some friends to find excellent sushi. Having seen Tsukiji in a couple of television specials and worked in a much smaller market in the past I thought it would be interesting to see the real thing. Perhaps I should blame Dr. Bestor for the fact that I ended up spending two half-days engrossed in Tsukiji market but once I read the book and got over the initial shock of the place I felt like I had an inside edge and couldn't pull myself away. The book does an excellent job of balancing personal insights and experiences with objective accounts of the market's history and statistics and provides a behind the scenes understanding of supply and distribution activity as well as the multigenerational, family-run stalls. It's one thing to see the tuna auctions; it's another to have an understanding of how the fish got there, who buys them, how they are sold to the supply and distribution chains, the role of the vendors, the history of the building and other details that give it depth. In the end, after four days of tramping around Tokyo to sample great sushi and other foods, we agreed that the best sushi we had was at a tiny restaurant in the outer market. And my visits to Tsukiji - which is sadly be being replaced by a more modern facility that can better meet the needs of a city that has grown since the facility was built - were the most fascinating part of my visit thanks largely to Dr. Bestor's book.

This book is not just about fish
By Harry Eagar
"If a maritime species can be consumed by human beings, in Japan, it almost certainly has been," writes Harvard anthropologist and sushi aficionado Theodore Bestor.

And the place to get it is Tsukiji at the mouth of the Sumida River in Tokyo, the world's biggest fish market, where millions of pounds of fish a day and billions of dollars worth of seafood a year are received, sold (usually more than once) and shipped. That's about five times bigger than New York's (lately extinct) Fulton Fish Market.

Although Tsukiji controls only a tenth of Japan's seafood business, the Japanese are so devoted to seafood and have so much money that fisheries around the world operate on Tsukiji's beat.

New fisheries have been created just for Tsukiji, like the air-flown fresh Atlantic bluefin tuna business. Tuna is king at Tsukiji, to the point that conservationists fear the extinction of the Atlantic bluefin.

Bestor's "Tsukiji" is comprehensive, neatly fitting the market into both historical and present-day contexts, but his main interest is in what he calls intermediate wholesalers.

There are about 1,600 of them, narrowly specialized. They are proud of their alleged origin as supporters of the first ruling Shogun in Edo (now Tokyo), of their knowledge of fish (but, of course, the younger generation doesn't know what the old-timers think they should), of their hometowns, their high schools, their religious sodalities, family ties, festivals and staying power.

Staying power especially. Some dealers claim to be of the 17th generation. Tsukiji was the famous fish market of Nihonbashi until the Great Kanto earthquake destroyed it in 1923. Rebuilt in a new location, Tsukiji seems to have carried its history along with it successfully.

It is facing an uncertain future again, as usual, says Bestor. The challenges come from the market structure, which is shifting from auctions to direct, negotiated deals. And from the municipal government, which wants to move the cramped, decaying market.

It's within walking distance of Ginza, and many dealers worry that moving away will kill the market. It will almost certainly kill the "outer" market of little stalls and restaurants that congregates around the inner market. (Bestor provides a guide for tourists.)

All markets have, to anthropologists, a certain sameness, but Tsukiji has some uniquely Japanese features. Sakidori is the oddest, compared with American methods.

The auctions begin around 5 a.m., too late for supermarket chains that have to wrestle their purchases through Tokyo's traffic and also need extra time to clean, cut, wrap and price packages. Smaller local shops don't need so much lead time.

Sakidori allows the big guys to carry off whatever they want before the auction, which gives them an advantage in obtaining the best quality items. But the price is set by the smaller guys who stay later.

Another obvious difference between Tsukiji and American markets is the place of religious rites at Tsukiji. Japanese fishmongers may not be any more religious than American businessmen, but they are more likely to organize business matters in religious contexts, from parading at festivals to going as business groups to famous shrines.

Bestor has attempted to write a book for both academic anthropologists and for general readers, and cheerfully invites the general reader to skip some chapters.

It's worth the effort of reading it all. This book is not just about fish.

Detailed book on a fascinating subject
By Matthew D. Cowles
I've never seen the Tsukiji fish market in operation, but I'm quite sure that it's fascinating, and one of the best reasons I have for thinking that is this big and detailed book. Theodore Bestor is a professor of anthropology at Harvard, but unlike a stereotypical anthropologist, he doesn't study fossils or primitive tribes. He studies contemporary Japanese economic institutions.

The book is a serious work of academic scholarship but, happily, it's only a little less readable for that. Professor Bestor descends into opaque academic jargon only once and then pretty briefly. (It rather feels as though he does it once just to prove that he can.) Other that that brief bit, there's only a smattering of academic jargon in the book and most of it is perfectly understandable. Professor Bestor is occasionally a bit repetitive, and there are a few inelegant chapter introductions and summaries ("In this chapter I have..."), but there's very little here that hinders an interested lay-person's enjoyment. Besides, who but an academic would spend 15 years visiting and learning about a fish market? Anyone who has an interest in Japanese culture should be glad that Professor Bestor did because there's a lot to learn from reading the book.

Professor Bestor explains the market's history, its seventeenth-century origin in nearby Nihonbashi, its move to Tsukiji in 1923, its move into the current buildings in 1935, its closure during the second world war, its resurgence in the 1950s, and its likely future move to a new location across the Sumida river. In equally careful detail, he tells us about the market's mechanisms and its participants: the auctions and the seven auction-houses, the hundreds of wholesalers and how they do business, how the market changes in anticipation and reaction to consumers' changing preferences, and so on.

There's no question that there are a lot of interesting facts here. I'd never have guessed that sushi as we know it was invented in the middle of the nineteenth century. But, perhaps not surprisingly, Professor Bestor is at his best when he's interpreting and analyzing as an anthropologist. Economic transactions don't happen in a vacuum.

We get a wonderfully clear picture of the numerous overlapping formal and informal relationships among the market's participants and between them and the various parts of local and national government that license and regulate the market. We also get to see wholesalers changing their businesses, not just in response to short-term market changes, but also in response to larger-scale economic trends. While they were once exclusively family businesses, many are now becoming increasingly like ordinary corporations.

Japanese social structures are famously opaque to outsiders and Professor Bestor has done a fabulous job learning about and explaining a fascinating place. And his descriptions are good enough that you can almost smell the fish. There's also a useful guide to to visiting the market at the end of the book.

Stop Making Mistakes Candidates Make Over and Over Again - Do You Want the Job?

Learn from my 20 years of interviewing and hiring people just like you, across multiple Fortune 500 companies.

Don't take my word for it - read the real stories of how people landed their dream job with this information.

You're qualified for the job - it should be yours. Let me show you what goes through the head of the interviewer so you can use it to your advantage. An advantage others won't have.

I've captured a highly condensed set of recommendations in this book that will put you in the very small set of interviewees that will stand above other candidates.

Whether you are seeking an entry level or an experienced management position these recommendations will give you the edge. I see "bad" behaviors across all levels of interviews, without candidates even being aware of what they are doing that prevents them from being hired.

You don't need to memorize 101 interview questions and answers.
You need actual experiences from the other side of the table to guide you.

Listen to Hiring Managers - Is the book you're reading now written by the person who decides to hire you, or by someone else involved in the process such as a recruiter or human resources role? If so their guidance may get you an interview, but won't give you insight into what goes through the manager's head.

"...As a manager that often conducts interviews and ultimately performs the hiring, I wanted to see if the experiences presented aligned with mine. In a nutshell, it was a concise echo of all that I have seen and experienced myself over the last several years. For all the people I pass up, I wish I c!ould give them a copy of this book for their next interview--they certainly would perform much better if they took these suggestions to heart." - Mike M. (Manager)
"I have been unemployed for over a year and have been on numerous interviews that I thought went well...but no offers came in. Last month I had 2 interviews in the same week and really wanted - and needed - an offer. I read this book and really listened to what Russell said. WOW!! I got an offer from each employer and I got to pick which job I really wanted. I start in 2 weeks. Amen!" - Chris F. (Landed the job in 2015)

From the Author
I wrote this book to help people - plain and simple. After hiring hundreds of people throughout my career, and rejecting hundreds more after an interview, I wanted to concisely demonstrate how to think about an interview. It is critically important that you come in prepared and are able to understand the intent behind each question so you can frame your answer around what the interviewer is looking for.
Memorizing 100's of questions and answers is not optimal - in fact it makes you come across as a robot, leads to you being flustered, and the entire interview becomes all about how well you memorize facts.

I value each and every review that is left on my book and emails sent to me from my web site - your feedback provides the context for me to address challenges your are facing in my future books and articles on my blog.

I know you will find my extensive experiences from the other side of the desk helpful, and look forward to hearing about your success.

Concise book that gives you what you need, when you need it.
By Nathan Mercer
I work in a career center and there are points made in this book that other books of much longer length and very pricey just don't seem to touch on. This should be in everyones library to read at least a few days before the interview so you can really digest some of the wisdom that the author is shares.

Some points that I really like - "This is about what you can do for my team and my company." Sounds simple, right? But how many times do people go on and on about what they are looking for in a company or what their needs are. The hiring manager doesn't want to hear your problems - they want to hear the reasons why you should be chosen over everyone else.

The other thing that hits home is the point that the "interview starts when you get out of your car." Treating the receptionist in an unprofessional manner might doom you before you even start!

The bulk of the book covers a few different questions with examples of good responses, poor responses, and what to do if you having something negative in your past that needs to be addressed. This is done for each question!!

One of the best sections is the insight as to "Why" the question is being asked in the first place.

Tuckerton gives sage advice and really tries to change the paradigm of the reader. You need to think like a hiring manager when you go for an interview, not an interviewee!

Thank you very much for this wonderful resource!

Short and to the point!
By Sunshine from Bean Town
I read this in 30 minutes. I have a few other such books written by recruiters. They are filled with "steps," acronyms, etc, too much info, too wordy. Your book was helpful to me because I do tend to ramble, and often have felt, yes I am good on paper, but the actual interview flops. After reading your book I now realize my mistakes and am energized on what things I will now do differently.

Helped me land a job!
By Saesomething
I have never taken the time to write a review for a book, but I felt compelled to share my experience with the author and other job seekers. After interviewing a dozen times during my job search and never getting an offer, it occurred to me that interviewing was not my strength. Whenever the interviewer asked me a question, I would start blabbering some story that had no discernable thesis or I would be too painfully honest in my answers. Essentially, I could turn off a prospective boss with astonishing efficiency.

I knew this was an area where I needed some guidance. Russell Tuckerton gives excellent guidance. He has sat through hundreds of interviews as the interviewer and has seen every mistake that a job candidate could make. He shares what those mistakes are and why they are mistakes. At 45 pages, his insight is both comprehensive and concise.

I cannot stress enough how much this book helped me. After landing another interview, I bought this book, read it, and applied it. That night, my husband and I did a mock interview using the suggestions Tuckerton gave. I walked into the interview feeling confidant. I followed Tuckerton's advice and gave clear and concise answers. And guess what....I LANDED THE JOB!!

After I was offered the job, the job recruiter said that everyone was "very impressed" by my interviewing skills. Because of this book, I was able to better communicate my skills and assets.

So listen, if you feel like you are sabotaging yourself during your interview, I get it. I really do. Interviews are a hard game to play (especially for the unprepared.) However, Tuckerton's book helps you see through the eyes of the interviewer and it helps you walk into your interview prepared. I cannot stress how essential this book was to me in my success.

Please do buy this book and spread the word. Every job seeker needs to read this book.

Facing Codependence, by Pia Mellody, Andrea Wells Miller

Pia Mellody creates a framework for identifying codependent thinking, emotions and behaviour and provides an effective approach to recovery. Mellody sets forth five primary adult symptoms of this crippling condition, then traces their origin to emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical and sexual abuses that occur in childhood. Central to Mellody's approach is the concept that the codependent adult's injured inner child needs healing. Recovery from codependence, therefore, involves clearing up the toxic emotions left over from these painful childhood experiences.

From Publishers Weekly
This book stands out among the current glut of material on codependence because it claims the realm of parenting for its vantage point. The authors believe that codependents must heal themselves in order not to repeat the "less than nurturing" behaviors of their own addicted or emotionally dysfunctional parents. Hence, they couple strategies for recovery with guidelines on what is and is not "normal" in the parent-child relationship. The authors' conclusions will invite controversy; for instance, they suggest that "emotional sexual abuse" of children may lead to homosexuality in adulthood. Nor are they reluctant to generalize: "Although physical and mental illness aren't addictions, their effect on the family is the same." Offsetting the opinionated commentary is great compassion for the helpless, hurt children who live inside adult codependents. Mellody and Andrea Wells Miller are coauthors of Breaking Free: A Recovery Workbook for Facing Co de pend ence ; J. Keith Miller is a freelance writer. Author tour.

Amazing insights!
By Goldie
I picked up this book because I was suspicious that I was stuck in a codependent relationship. (Forgive me if I reveal too much personal information in my review). I realized I wasn't as codependent as I thought, having no shame for myself except feeling the sense of worthlessness only when with my partner by how he treated me. I already saw the cycles of up and down we went through. I'm thinking a fight is over after we apologize (and then we can go into kiss and make up time), but the changes didn't follow (and he needed "time" to get over it so no kiss and hugs - just pushing me away), and then the pattern repeated. The book has helped me realize and understand how codependency works, how I was drawn into it by not seeing the reality of a codependent and their mental thoughts/filters. I thought I was operating with a normal healthy person with their own sense of value who just had it in for me, no matter what I did or said to prove otherwise, and that he was simply determined to keep me in relationship hell of his fear of "committment" but didn't want me to leave him! Ah, so I got clearer about both of us. I realized I had to step back and trust myself to choose right for me, and allow/urge him to get healing through CoDA (as I have been doing) and find his higher power. I threw in there "The Work" of Byron Katie, as her method is a simple straight shot to truth and sanity of changing our thinking. Fortunately, my (ex)partner is interested in reading this book when I'm done with it.

I often heard my partner express after a fight or after I expressed how he hurt me with his choice of actions, or 5 yrs and still no ring nor living together (we are both older, REALLY???), that he wished he could disappear, he needs to be alone, he's no good to anyone, etc. What's with the pity party? Only he was really into this - not just a moment. I noticed he's had several failed relationships before me, has no friends to speak of, as well as failed to be a part of my family (who openly welcomed him - including my ex-husband!), and chose to leave me out of important information or fun time. After reading the book I no longer thought he was just a loner, but a man ashamed of himself and had little value in himself and felt defeated by his own guilt, shame and anger. I saw his filters ebb and flow for the moments they fit him and he kept saying he can't figure out how he keeps hurting me. It's how he's always lived - in an unconscienctious realm of codependency totally unaware of how he affects others. But he's right, he's not ready for a healthy relationship with me. I can let him go and move into a better life for myself. But I'm using this book to help me heal from the damaging effects he's left in his wake. For instance, I still can't even THINK about being around him or knowing when he gets that starry-eyed obsession over seeing his daughter, giving her things he's never offered me as a mate, how he's ditched me to cater to her beck and call at anything she wanted - even in the face of when I had a true need, or having her blast me with crazy unrealistic fits while he watched it happen - something my own 4 children have never done to me, nor do I or their father allow - we talked/listened openly. I knew this was not normal and healthy behavior, but most people liked to tell me I was "jealous" (I'm not a jealous person) or that it's just a dad wanting to see his kid (hmmmm, really? look at the dynamics of healthy father/daughter and healthy romantic long term partner closer). So the book helped me understand what I was dealing with was bigger than me, wasn't good for me, and now how to handle/remove myself until/if he heals himself.

Pia gets very specific about explaining things here, as the method in which I can understand them. I'm all about the subtleties of life, thoughts, and possibilities, seeing things most people glaze over. She hits the proverbial nail on the head, making all things come to light with the truth of her experiences that ring of sanity and clarity.

I can't tell you the relief I felt once I saw the depth of codependence through this book, how it affects people we interact with, how it hurts oneself and others, and how to heal in the process of recovery of being a whole healthy person again. How long it takes is up to the individual and their willingness to stay with the process and trust in their access to a higher power through their open mind. Opening the mind is a process, but it's also the answer to your healing. One day at a time. One step at a time.

My prayers are for all the people out there who know something in them isn't feeling good to find their answers through understanding by seeking them out. I would start with Pia's books. She's offering a beautiful gift like no other I've seen before.

Much better than: "Codependent No More
By Lisa
Much better than: "Codependent No More." This book is about what it is, what it may look like in everyday life, and where it stems from (how to recognize it from past events/cycles. There is a workbook made by Pia Mellody that gets more into how to correct ourselves. This is book is more about recognizing it. I have not tried the workbook yet.

By Ariel R.
This book has completely changed my life. I didn't realize that my "normal" life is actually not normal at all and needed to be addressed. I've already purchased 5 other copies for family and friends. I would stand on a street corner and hand these out for free if I could afford it.
