Good but very basic

This is an excellent introduction to game audio. It is however very very basic. I would suggest this book to anyone who does not have previous knowledge about game audio. I found it to be a little too basic, but because I knew much of the material does not take away from the text.

The book has a general overview of many topics but does not generally give enough detail to successfully use that thing in a game. For example music loops are discussed: "When created successfully there will be no indication of the actual repeat point... There are many ways to accomplish this, but how it is done effectively is entirely dependent on the style of music." A quick google search will show a few methods of looping a cue for anyone interested. Of course a technical discussion on looping audio would have taken up a good deal of space. There would not be enough room in a single volume to cover all of the topics in great detail.

Chapter 1: History of game audio (sections on functions of game audio, history of game audio, different job roles for audio professionals, and other professionals at the game company like programmers)

The included dvd has some useful things like audio demos, but would not change my review rating one way or the other.

I would recommend this book for anyone who knows very little about the above topics. It is a great overview and intro into the world of game audio. However if you are more experienced you may not find the book as valuable and instead might benefit more from a book on just voice overs (for example).

A book to define a generation

Her Privates We also published as The Middle Parts of Fortune by Frederic Manning

Every so often a book comes along that defines a generation in a certain time and place. This is just one of those books. Her Privates We tells the story of the ordinary men fighting for Britain in the trenches at Somme in the summer and fall of 1916. The language and events described are raw and unflinching. They are not the idealized, separate world of the officer corp, but the war as it was, filled with filth and muck, anger and apathy.

We are told this story through the third person narrative of a soldier identified only as Bourne. He is a little different from the rest of the men, clearly of a different class. It is evident in his age, his manners, his speech, and his education. It is clear to not only to the fighting men, but also the officers who both resent and respect him. He is told repeatedly to go in for an officer's commission, something which he tries to avoid but eventually accepts as his duty.

There are times when this book moves slowly. This can be hard on some readers, but I think it was intentional and used to show what war was like. It was filled with waiting, endless drilling and parades, and when they moved to the front, it was quick and violent, over almost before you knew what had happened, only to be replaced with more of the interminable waiting.

Bourne is modeled on the author himself and the book is loosely based on his own experiences. He wrote this book at the urging of a friend in 1929, when it was published anonymously under the name The Middle Parts of Fortune. At the time of publication it was considered vulgar and had to be edited and an expurgated version was released the following year, the original version all but disappearing until 1977.

This book was quite popular among leading literary figures and other personages of the time. Included among them are Lawrence of Arabia, who counted it among his favorites, and Ernest Hemingway who described it as "the finest and noblest book of war among men." I am inclined to agree with that sentiment.

Great book, noting quite like it for understanding life ...

Great book, noting quite like it for understanding life in WWI trench warfare. Later I found out this is a bowdlerized text. The actual book, published some years later is Middle Parts of Fortune. Much more fulfilling book in so many ways. This is the first fiction title I would recommend for getting a feel for war 100 years ago. A war that changed Western Civilization entirely within the short lives of the soldiers at the front.

Delightful, totally delightful is all I can say about J.R. Rain & Kris Carey's newly released novel, THE ACCIDENTAL SUPERHEROINE! This warp-speed super spy spoof is based on the premiss an "accident" in a giant Swiss underground cyclotron causes three physicists to be transformed. Their change pulls the reader along into an international crisis fuel by incredible feats of human metamorphosis. Can a super villian be stopped? Can a lone female physicist prevail? Will her fellow physicist and crush be rescued? This is a story well worth reading.

It's clever, it's brilliant, it's geeky.

Every page is exciting. It's a rollicking international adventure thriller that's packed densely with science, superscience, science fiction, pop culture, humor and more twists and turns than I expected. It was ever so much fun to get inside the mind of a very intelligent protagonist who makes no apologies for a high I.Q. And you'll meet great villains you will love to hate!

I guess you might have to be on the smart side to understand some of the science concepts in this book, but even if you don't know what quantum physics is, the superheroine who uses her brainpower for good, not evil, is compelling and funny and just downright adorably smart. And you will be entertained and learn so much cool science-y stuff if you read this book.

This was a rollicking thrill ride and I hope it becomes a movie because it deserves it. When do we ever get such a brilliant heroine? What a treat!

If you're looking for something completely original that doesn't dumb down an adventure, sink your smartypants teeth right into THE ACCIDENTAL SUPERHEROINE by J.R. Rain and Kris Carey.

What a collaboration of two clever writers! I loved it so much and recommend it for anyone who is tired of the same-old, same-old in genre novels. This book is fresh, fresh, fresh and will likely be a trendsetter for wannabe copycats.

Quick and Fun Read

While reading my ARC copy, I began jotting down all the best one liners. I soon realized I would use a lot of paper. I love a book that makes me laugh. Mira is very funny. How can you not love a shero whose response to a particle acceleration accident is: "It was like God had cursed me by making all of my childhood wishes come true. I was wearing the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak and was stuck on the set of the Sound of Music." This is a quick fun read with all the elements of the classic superhero plot: evil megalomanical villian, spunky shero, handsome hero, and a secret government plot. The seeds for the sequel are well planted. The ending was a little abrupt, but struck the right chord. I look forward to Rain and Carey's next entry in this series.
