About the Author
Eileen John is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Louisville, specializing in aesthetics and philosophy of literature. Her essays have appeared in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism, Philosophy and Literature, and The Henry James Review.

Dominic McIver Lopes is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of Understanding Pictures (1996) and co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Aesthetics (2000) and Imagination, Philosophy, and the Arts (2003). He is also co-editor, with Berys Gaut, of the Blackwell series New Directions in Aesthetics.

I suppose you can't please everyone, but this anthology provides a good overview of the field. The essays chosen for inclusion are thoughtful and varied. Just take a look through the table of contents and you'll understand its breadth. Its first chapter pays homage to some classical thinkers and their works. Its a respectful gesture that proves the enduring importance of works like The Republic, written in another context and before the style of modern academia came into its own. The next chapters deal with how we define and classify literature. More focused segments on the components of literature itself follow. The collection manages to maintain coherence and focus, so you feel the works were chosen intentionally. Best of all, the texts are condensed to be more focused and straightforward. It's a gift to be able to actually get through a piece in one sitting. The end result is that you can cover a variety of subjects and navigate adjacencies as you please. The goal of philosophy instruction, as I see it, should be to encourage exploration. This book allow that, meanwhile giving students a working knowledge of notable theorists and their works.

It's also a rather significant volume, with a great deal of different texts. I could see it being used as a catch-all reference for beginning and intermediate students of the field. It gives you the foundation you need to advance to more specialized books related to your interest or academic focus. Since it's clearly marketed as an anthology, I am not going to insult the editors by pointing out minutia I would have liked to seen included. Frankly, I am nowhere near the level of expertise necessary to do so. I would prefer a general overview to obscure and narrowly-targeted pieces that were frankly never intended for mass audiences, and woud lose their intricacy if given a fleeting treatment.

The font is readable and definitely aided by the two-column layout. Once again, the presentational approach foregrounds the content and gives it the attention it deserves. The book, because of its readability and core value, has deepened my interest in the field. I see reason for average people - especially those who value the arts in their daily lives - to pick this one up. It's thorough and comprehensive. It begs important questions about fiction, characterization, criticism, and more. Take a look, and think critically about what you read - in this volume, and everywhere else.

does not cover the whole field

The size of this book and the subtitle give the impression that this book covers the whole field. It doesn't. This hodgepodge of Ordinary Language and other approaches to the philosophy of literature is not the whole picture. See "A Book Worth Reading" for a different and systematic approach to this new branch of philosophy.

The articles in this anthology are almost all by philosophers who have only a passing knowledge of literature. The results are sophistic and at time sophomoric.

Missing also are some famous contributions to the field, such as Sartre's What is Literature? a book which raises some serious problems for literature. Also, the work of John M. Ellis.

If you can afford it, buy all four books. If not, you're better off with A Book Worth Reading.

I got the game and I needed the guide and here it is, since this was published a while back, Nintendo Power still made guides for their games and this was one of them, and because the company it'self made the guide you can guarantee the book is well worth it to buy

About the Author
Robert Boyd has written widely on evolutionary theory, focusing especially on the evolution of cooperation and the role of culture in human evolution. His book Culture and the Evolutionary Process received the J. I. Staley Prize, and he has also published numerous articles in scientific journals and edited volumes. Boyd is currently the Origins Professor in the School of Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University.

Joan B. Silk has conducted extensive research on the social lives of monkeys and apes, including extended fieldwork on chimpanzees at Gombe Stream Reserve in Tanzania and on baboons in Kenya and Botswana. She is also interested in the application of evolutionary thinking to human behavior. She has published numerous articles in scientific journals and edited volumes. She is currently a professor in the School of Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University.

Really like this textbook.

Very thorough overview of human evolution from proto-primates up to modern man, in an accessible format. It's even kind of goofy and funny in spots, which is always a nice trick. We were able to get through the whole book in a single semester.

Championship-worthy guide of homonids and evolution

Excellent book. Even though I am actually not majoring in anthropology (actually, as a requirement for natural science in Boston University), it is very detailed and has good connections to high-school biology as well. So far, I think it is very accessible for even the most biologically ready high school student, and it has very vivacious (lovely) pictures. In general, it is a championship-winning book, with excellent objectives clearly outlined in each chapter, and great review questions in the end.

Bonus: it is worth reading the 5% of a (anything) is better than no like a (anything) at all. Thanks prof Hodges Simeon :-)

just like the first

This is the second coloring book released by Zenescope.
The first was Grimm Fairy Tales, featuring artwork from the comic of the same name. In that book they included 40 illustrations and 5 pattern pages. On the cover it stated that it had "46 illustrations to color." I am going to assume that they included one of the small illustrations on the title, publication or how-to pages. Not really sure what one.

This second book is more focused on Alice in Wonderland, obviously.
In this book you have the title, publication and how-to pages, just like the first.
In this volume you get quite a few more pattern pages. 15 to be exact.
And only 28 actual illustrations. Plus, there is now a page full of Zenescope social media information and a "coming soon" page. Looks like they will be releasing a fourth coloring book. The third is available for pre-order on Amazon.

So the first book had 45 illustrations not including the intro pages.
This book has 43, not including intro pages.
2 less illustrations, and instead they used them to push sales and social media. Which they could have technically done on one of the three intro pages.
11% of the first book was patterns (5/45).
35% of this book is patterns.

OUCH!!!!

That means 12 less illustrations in this book.

Also, I am not a huge fan of the paper quality in these books. It is just basic printer paper.
I will definitely have to scan and print these onto a heavier stock.

Hopefully Zenescope goes back to having a higher concentration of illustrations in their books. I appreciate a few of the pattern pages for testing out color combos and shading, but I think there are too many in this book. Another thing to note on the pattern pages...none of them travel into the binding.

Btw, if you are a huge Queen of Hearts fan, get this book. There are quite a few pics of her in here.

Bait and switch

I bought this book against my own rules not to buy books that do not have thumbnails. Bad decision. The only page in this book that is even similar to the one on the cover is the one that looks like the cover page. The others are dark or they are just plain ugly. I think I got taken. Never again will I buy a book without preview pages. Can I have my money back?

Awesome illustrations and well worth the wait. Another over the top offering by Joe Brush and crew. Excellent art on single sided paper. Not as many pages as the first, I think they were extremely generous with book number one. Very excited about this amazing book. Look forward to many hours of relaxation and fun. Alice is back with her sexy crew and they definitely live up to their sexy spicy antics. If you loved the first one and are a fan, you won't be disappointed. If you are new to Joe Brusha, buy one and two.

Web services have attracted much attention recently as the next "big thing" in computing technology. Vendors of all shapes and sizes have announced their support for Web services technologies, and every month a new Web services conference is popping up somewhere on the globe. With all this hype and attention, sometimes itAs difficult to really discover what Web services are, where they fit in your company, what the business case is, and how you can actually get started taking advantage of this technology.

BEA has been working with customers to answer many of these questions, and provide solutions that enable companies to easily construct Web services that meet their needs today. About the Author

Joseph Weber has been working with Java full-time since its early alpha stages and has helped advise a number of Fortune 500 companies on the goals of Java. Joe has served on advisory committees for and taught classes at universities in the Midwest, and continues to be a strong advocate for Java in the educational environment. Most recently, Joe contributed to Sams Java Web Services Unleashed (067232363X), due in April 2002.

Mark Wutka is a consultant who specializes in helping companies get the most out of Java. He has built numerous Java, JSP and servlet applications for clients including Delta Airlines, and has taught classes, written articles and books, and given lectures. Good Starting Point

I like this book. It was a big help for me to get started with Weblogic Workshop. I found it to be organized pretty well and the information extremely helpful.
I would recommend this book to someone that wanted to get started quickly with Workshop. But one problem is by the time I got this book and created Web Services with 7.0 then Weblogic 8.1 hit the market.
Also, the BEA documentation is very good and I could have probably gotten by using their resources. However, the amount of documentation and detail is overwhelming. I found this book helpful as well as an excellent starting point for WebServices and Workshop.

good book for starters

I have read this book and find that it is a good book if you want to get started with Web services on BEA Weblogic workshop. The starting chapters are good and they really work in Workshop but the ending chapters have lost focus and become very theoretical. If the authors can work the last chapters so that they provide more hands on knowledge to devlopers, it would be great...

Worth the Money

If you want to learn Workshop, buy this book! By the end of the book you will be flying thru the tool.
The early chapters go easy and introduce the development environment. This is extremely well written.
And the examples in the early chapters work! You can easily create the web services yourself.
The later chapters loose focus on examples and more just explain how to do the task using workshop. And then the final chapter, "An Online Ordering System", seems to be written by an alein; the one web services does not work and will not work the way it is declared, one of the jave files is missing completely from the text but is provided on the CD. This is the reason for only four stars.
And then when you go to SAMSPUBLISHING web site, they have lost the book completely.
