Fantastic Book for Teachers

As a high school English teacher, I have been searching for a good collection of SHORT, contemporary examples of well-crafted non-fiction to share with my students because our curriculum is seriously lacking in this area. I won't retell the plot, which earlier readers have already done so well, or introduce the characters. You know them: they are the gay men, and gay women you either have as friends, or wish you did. Fully articulated, never cardboard, caught up in a plot which the reader can't wait to follow to its conclusion. The hook of the writing immediately pulls the reader into the story, but the author brilliantly throws cultural references, quotations, Manhunt, sex, (hot, twenty-something, go for it, from the back, front, side, doggy style, grunting, panting...you get the idea) into the mix, not from a marketing suggestion, but, as with the entire book, because it is how life is lived. The reader smiles, laughs, leaks without being able to pause, unless the characters are taking a nap, or eating a meal themselves. If you loved Tales Of the City, you will love 'Green Eyes.'

Green Eyes, Great fun and well written!

I too was given a book by the author and thoroughly enjoyed this publication.. It is erotic with a twist, its chocked full of wonderful gay fantasies well and uniquely written by a master story teller! His style of writing is short, to the point and I found truly refreshing and unusual in style.. Its a welcome bit of 'froth', although Im not saying the content is light but its great fun, never misses a trick, and is a real delight. A good read with an creative twist. Its shaken and not stirred and good for a most amusing time! Buy it.

I Dreamt of a Man with Green Eyes

Green Eyes has opened my eyes to another world. As a gay man I realized that I have been very sheltered. As I read through his book I felt that I was John Lee. Very few books have made me feel like I was the protagonist or that I’m actually there in the scene smelling the scents, feeling the temperature, or go through the emotions. With Michael’s book I felt all three and more. If dreamt of a man with Green Eyes and it was due to Michael’s writing.

An interesting but sometimes controversial history of Stalin

The author begins his book by assuring readers that his information is based on the latest Russian archival information available and also points out that Putin had shut down the pipeline to the west and that any new or confirming information will probably take years before becoming public.

The author delivers a deliberate presentation of prewar history of Stalin, the start of Communism and the people of Russia. Lenin's influence on the peasants to rise up and overturn the present nobility class and intelligentisia and his plans to spread Communism throughout the world is discussed. Its also significant that Lenin just before his death tries to exclude Stalin from taking over, knowing his heavy handed ways would be bad for the spread of Communism. Lenin fails and Stalin career is then presented, showing his bloody rise to power. Once in power, further restrictions are placed on the public, collectivization of farms is inaugurated, increased arms production and mobilization of troops begins as well. The purges will follow that will kill or imprison thousands more. Stalin wanted to be invincible from within and without and he put his whole country on a loose war footing.

So far the author's account is conventional history with nothing to argue about but his next claim is controversial. Mr Pleshakov brings forth the theory that Stalin was planning a preemptive strike on Eastern Europe that would capture the land from Greece to Poland and that the attack would probably occur in 1941 or possible 1942. That's the reason behind Stalin's appeasement of Hitler. He didn't want Hitler to suspect a possible attack was coming and strike first.
This introduction is almost 100 pages and it gives the reader a solid foundation for the coverage of the coming war. Starting with June 22, 1941 and for the next ten days, the author provides a daily account of the events of the war along the entire front which includes Stalin's participation, influence and reactions to said events. Stalin thought he knew more than his generals and wouldn't listen to their advice, always insisting on attacking the enemy regardless if his armies were ready for those offensives. Stalin also thought he knew Hitler and could handle him. When Hitler attacked, Stalin was shocked, losing temproary confidence in his abilities and was worried he would be thrown out of power.
Its clearly shown in all three sectors in those early weeks, that unlike the Russian response to Napoleon's invasion, Pavlov, Boldon, Kirponos, Kuznetsov and others were constantly being ordered to attack unprepared which would cost the Red Army 100,000s of men without making any gains.

Much of this book is conventional history that can be read in many other books but there are small nuggets of information of meetings held, orders given, people's reactions to those events that aren't in older books and for this reason alone is worth the read. The author also has a concise easy to understand style that also favors reading this book over others.
In addition to these little items, the author is convinced that Stalin was planning his own attack westward and builds a good case for it. Viktor Suvorov and couple others have also promoted this offensive position. On the other hand, David Glantz in his book, "Stumbling Colossus" believes quite firmly that since the Red Army wasn't adequately prepared, would never have attacked. With Stalin's proven lack of military expertise (he couldn't read maps correctly or understand the advantage of choosing terrain properly or concentration of power etc) but with his war doctrine of always being on the offensive it would not be surprising to have seen him attack preemptively in 1941 or maybe 1942 if Hitler hadn't attacked first.

Since this summary doesn't include tactical coverage there aren't a lot of maps and those present are general purpose maps of the entire front. There are a few photos to inspect as well. There is an impressive Notes section and Bibliography if further study is desire. The book closes with an Index.
This small book is concisely written and packs a surprising amount of useful information. New and casual readers will learn a lot from it and even experienced students can pick up those small nuggets of unusual information as well. Even if you initially don't agree with Stalin's preemptive strike theory, I think, you'll still appreciate reading about it.

About the Author

Maria Grosz-Ngaté is an anthropologist and Associate Director of the African Studies Program at Indiana University. She has conducted long-term research in Mali and Senegal with a focus on rural social transformations, gender, and Islam.

John H. Hanson is Associate Professor of History at Indiana University and an editor of History in Africa. His research concerns the history of West Africa Muslim communities during the past 200 years.

Patrick O’Meara is Special Advisor to the Indiana University President, Vice President Emeritus and Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs and Political Science. He was the editor (with Phyllis Martin) of all of the previous editions of Africa. His interests include South African politics and international development.

i ordered this because it is a favorite book of a friend of mine. apparently, ellen white covers so many topics in it, for instance, how people should interact with each other within a congregation when one of the members is doing something inappropriate. my girlfriend seems to think that ellen white hit the nail on the head and gives very good advice. i ordered the book for myself to use as a reference, and haven't used it yet to have an opinion of my own to share.

An exhilarating jaunt with God!

I am by no means a religious person. I grew up Roman Catholic but hated going to CCD because I felt like everything they were saying God did or didn't do was all a lie. So when I heard about this book I was very interested to see what this guy had to say. I have to admit if THIS was what I was taught when I was a kid I probably would have believed a little bit more! This memoir is funny and honest. It's not trying to force you to believe anything. But it does open your mind to ask the questions maybe you were too afraid to ask yourself. Grisetti is just speaking about what he experienced and honestly, it makes sense! All of it! It's a great quick read! Very much enjoyed it!

This book is extremely well done and well articulated. I would advise though that the reader approach this book with an open mind. Yes, some parts are, as the author states, "trippy," but I found his experience with God fascinating and well worth the journey. What would I ask if I was afforded the same opportunity? Would the answers still be the same? Only God knows. However, I do know that, as a spiritual person, it is important to ask questions, look for answers that make sense to us, and not be afraid to explore. Well, done, Mr. Grisetti, well done.

Great book

I bought this as a reference while working as a field engineer for offshore support vessels. It gives you a good understanding of ship design and how vessels and their cargo will react based on wave amplitude, frequency, etc. Definitely a good read and the printed pages included were awesome.

About the Author
WINSTON GRAHAM is the author of more than forty novels, including Cordelia, Marnie, The Walking Stick, Stephanie, and the Poldark series. His novels have been translated into seventeen languages. Six of his books have been made into films, the most notable being Marnie directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Two television series made from the Poldark novels were broadcast in twenty-two countries. Graham was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and in 1983 was awarded the OBE. He died in 2003.

" like he could hear me

Spoiler alert...don't read until after you have read the book...At THE pivotal point of the story I literally said out loud, "Oh, Ross!" like he could hear me. I mean come on, Demelza is the epitome of a good wife! How could you, Ross. How could you! I was actually hoping that the way it was written was going to leave wiggle room for this not to have happened, like later we would find out that Ross put Elizabeth in the bed and then walked away. But nope, he did the deed. OH ROSS!!!

Poldark struggles continue

Ross and Demelza continue to struggle from within and without, heartbreaking at times and eloquently written. Just as the reader thinks things cannot get any bleaker, surprises unfold. Always superbly written and a tale that will promise to divert.

Great Writing

The plots in the first five (of twelve) books in the Poldark saga are total page turners. However, Leaving the plot aside, Graham's writing style is pure pleasure. He brings the period, and place vividly alive for his readers. He has obviously done extensive research. The books read as though the author actually lived in Cornwall during the times of the Poldark characters. I hope the quality holds up for the remaining books.
