About the Author
Roger Z. George is professor of national security strategy at the National War College and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University in the Security Studies Program. He was a career CIA intelligence analyst who served at the State and Defense departments and has been the national intelligence officer for Europe. He is coeditor of several volumes on intelligence and national security studies, most recently The National Security Enterprise: Navigating the Labyrinth.

James B. Bruce is a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation. A retired career intelligence analyst, he served with CIA's Directorate of Intelligence and Directorate of Operations, and with the National Intelligence Council as deputy national intelligence officer for science and technology. An adjunct professor at Georgetown University, he has taught previously at the National War College, and as an adjunct at Columbia University and American University.

There's no room for arrogance when it comes to intelligence

I was watching a documentary on Israel’s famous Six Day War, and the big question is always how they came to be so well prepared. One of the pilots involved in the war said “above all, you have to have intelligence.” It might seem trivial compared to fighter aircraft and tanks, but for Israel, I bet 50% was intelligence. They knew the location of all the Egyptian airbases, when the planes would be on the ground, and where the defenses were. When it comes to intelligence, we can say “okay, we need to know where the enemy is and what kind of weapons they have.” But the question now is how you’re going to know. Are you watching them via satellite? Do you have a spy down there? Do you have a mole in their government? If so, how do you know you can trust them? This book covers all those things, especially with regard to the post-Cold War era.
Analyzing Intelligence devotes a chapter to the relationship between the intelligence gatherer and the analyst. It cites examples such as Pearl Harbor, The Yom Kippur War, and the Iranian Revolution, as examples of a weak relationship. In those three cases, there were few ears willing to listen to the information gathered on the respective countries. Israel’s spies, who’d spent years accumulating information on her neighbors, didn’t know that Egypt had surface-to-air missiles and wire-guided anti-tank Sagers from the USSR. In Iran, the US embassy didn’t have employees who spoke Farsi, and they knew nothing about the country. They didn’t know that the Shah was old, the army officers were incompetent, and the starving populace was angry. Ayatollah Khomeini, then living in Paris, was anything but quiet about his intentions. Somehow, nobody noticed.
It seems from this book that a problem with intelligence is the lack of cooperation between agencies. Pearl Harbor is used as an example of the US army and navy not sharing information, and others, like Iran in 1979, seem more an example of ignorance based on arrogance. Then there’s the failure to warn about India’s nuclear tests. But with Israel today, they seem to know everything everywhere. I suspect that when you have a tiny country, with a miniscule coastline and only one major airport, there’s less to be done. Keep in mind that today’s Arab leaders (like most third-world dictators) are rarely secretive, so it’s easy to listen in on their activities. But not so with North Korea. They’re super-secretive and impossible to penetrate. The people are all brainwashed. It remains to be seen what happens with them.

A Status Quo Book, Improved from 1st Edition, Still Pulls Punches

This is a very fine book, not least because of its inclusion of Jack Davis (search for as well as Carmen Medina (see them both at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog ), but it must still be categorized as a status quo book. Despite improvements from the 1st edition the authors still pull some punches -- I dare hope that by the 3rd edition -- and the book is certainly worthy of going forward -- they will get tougher, perhaps in a new final chapter -- Where Did We Go Wrong, Who Did We Ignore, How Do We Get It Right Now?

If you are an analyst or a trainer of analysts or a manager of analysts, this is essential reading, but it continues to validate my long-standing concerns about American intelligence:

1) Lack of a strategic analytic model (search for the term at Phi Beta Iota)

2) Lack of deep historical and multi-cultural appreciation including outreach to people that a) hate Americans and b) will never in a million years qualify for either citizenship or clearances

3) Lack of a deep understanding and necessary voice on the complete inadequacy of collection sources, the zero presence of processing and lack of desktop analytic tools, and the need for ABSOLUTE devotion to the truth, not--as is still the case, "within the reasonable bounds of dishonesty" aka "slam dunk"

4) Lack of integrity in the holistic analytic/true cost economics sense, not least of which is the analytic abject acceptance of the false premise that the best intelligence is top secret/sensitive compartmented information--see the free online articles "Intelligence for the President--AND Everyone Else" as well as "On Defense Intelligence -- Seven Strikes," both at CounterPunch.

This memoir takes place in 2005 and early 2006. The environmental nightmare that is the destruction of the Atchafalaya Basin continues. The title refers to a Native American term for the arrival of the Europeans in 1492 and beyond, which many refer to as "the great sadness." The thin places grow thinner, and author must come to grips with a thing none of his forefathers could have ever imagined: There are endings. There is finality.
The Louisiana Public Broadcasting documentary "Native Waters: A Chitimacha Recollection" was based on this book and its predecessor, "Native Waters: An Indigenous Fly Fisher's Journey Across Water and Time." It is now being broadcast nationwide on public broadcasting stations everywhere, and was an Emmy nominee and recipient of a Bronze Telly Award.

About the Author
Roger Emile Stouff is the son of Nicholas Leonard Stouff Jr., last chief of the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana, and Lydia Marie Gaudet Stouff, daughter of a Cajun farmer. He has been a journalist for more then thirty years and writer of the award-winning column “From the Other Side” in the St. Mary and Franklin Banner-Tribune. He was featured on the television show “Fly Fishing America” in 2006, and was writer and narrator of the documentary “Native Waters: A Chitimacha Recollection” on Louisiana Public Broadcasting in 2010.

The Great Sadness Is A Great Joy

Roger Stouff does an exceptional job of sharing the Culture of the Chitimacha by weaving tales of his experience as an Indian man watching his ancestral waters fade away while hanging on to as much tradition as he can. The book is at times poignant but always heartwarming because Stouff's love of his ancestry and of the waters of the Atchafalaya Basin always shine through.

Kurt Vonnegut and Robert Pirsig go fly-fishing

Roger Emile Stouff has delivered another gift to us folks who, because we are chained to conventions of time and space, inhabit only our safe world we can see and hear. In The Great Sadness, Mr. Stouff guides us through his "thin" place, where, as he so eloquently writes: "There are places where the boundaries between this world and the next, the separations of the seen and the unseen, are not so substantial."

This is a work of non-fiction. At times you have to remind oneself of this fact. He teaches you about his near Luddite obsession with handcrafted wooden boats and bamboo fly-fishing rods. But the most moving prose of this follow-up to his fine book, Native Waters, is when Mr. Stouff takes your head in his remarkable writing hand and opens doors into the world of his Native American ancestors where you would not venture without such a guide. I offer a few examples of his guidebook and if these do not strike a chord you may want to go see a neurologist to check your wiring.

The following describes his father's death.

"I keep his medicine bag close by. It's a small leather satchel, with buckskin fringe, no bigger than a thick trade paperback book. I don't know what's in it because it's his medicine bag. I have never opened it. It's full of the things that made him strong, kept him close to the water and protected him from the bad in the world. I can't possess his magic, but I can borrow from it because the same blood flows in my veins."

"Someday I'll have my own. Full of the things that strengthen and protect me. I haven't started to collect it. I'm a little lost over it, because I don't know what should be in there. He died before he could teach me. I thought of putting it in his coffin with him, but he had his abalone bolo tie on and the eagle feather in his hands, both full of power, and when I thought
of placing the bag at his side, the resonance of a tuning fork spoke in a deep voice slightly tinged with the accent of a man raised in Texas:
Keep it. I know the way.

If you, like me, are a recurrent visitor to Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, you will revel in his devotion to Quality. One need not be a devotee of the intricacies of the handmade bamboo fly-fishing rods he so admires to appreciate that the rod is an instrument by which the Quality of a man can be judged.

The Great Sadness is a work of Quality. It is highly recommended.

Roger Stouff's books in the mystery and sci-fi/fantasy genre are always fast paced, hard to put down tales. However, when he takes on matters close to his heart, like "The Great Sadness" the writing is profound and thought provoking. Like sitting with an elder listening to them speak of the old days. Ever since cultivating fire, the human species has depended on tapping new sources of energy for survival, writes global historian Crosby (Germs, Seeds, and Animals: Studies in Ecological History). This enjoyable, humorously anecdotal study provides a succinct overview of our voracious "appetite for energy," most particularly the inventive (and indiscriminate) exploitation of sunshine in its fossilized forms—peat, coal, oil and natural gas. The hunter-gatherers of the Paleolithic era depended on muscle power to move through their world, and not much changed, Crosby notes, until the advent of the Industrial Revolution, when the first steam-powered engine was invented in 1712 by ironmonger Thomas Newcomen (James Watt, Crosby says, merely improved on Newcomen's design). Advances in harnessing energy trapped in organic matter followed quickly: whale oil used for lighting was supplanted by coal gas, kerosene distilled from petroleum and finally Thomas Edison's light bulb—itself powered by the electricity generated from coal and oil. This history explores how an ingenious and adaptable humankind found ever more efficient ways to harness "concentrated sun energy." Tracing the historical route to this impasse, the author's trim tome has a droll tone that should make it considerably more appealing than the current torrent of grimmer, longer, and agenda-driven books on this subject. A veteran ecological historian, Crosby structures his story by the landmarks of energy technology--fire, the dynamo, the internal-combustion engine. And he emphasizes the indolent element of human nature: we like to get more work done with less effort. Surprisingly, cooking starts off Crosby's survey: it eased digestion, increased edibles, and probably helped induce the domestication of animals. These labor savers, Crosby illustrates in anecdotal style, reigned as the muscle-power maximum of energy production until Thomas Newcomen's 1712 steam engine ignited the Industrial Revolution. Can we be sure of this heritage

Some of us have read Alfred Crosby’s earlier books The Columbian Exchange and Measure of Reality, these fit with Children of the Sun and its story of our use of energy.

The European explorers great success in the Americas 500 years ago as explained in the Columbian exchange was exporting deadly germs that decimated American native’s and importing life supporting potatoes and corn. An example of some Children of the Sun getting ahead exploiting opportunities created by germs and plants. Crosby discusses an easily overlooked energy accomplishment, cooking. We are so accustomed to cooking it takes a Crosby to remind us how cooking dwarfs more recent energy accomplishments our cousins, apes and monkeys lack fire, can’t cook and so need huge guts and enormous teeth to chew and digest what we cook. Crosby surprised me by mentioning as an energy accomplishment our long time partnership with dogs. Dogs guard at night allowing us to rest and they also help hunt. Crosby allows that they, like our horses, chose us as much as we them. Not all animals are like this – think of Hyenas and Rhinos. Horses help plow (with our harnesses) and carry.
After discussing agriculture as energy harvesting as well as early work with water wheels and windmills, Crosby moves to mechanization and England. England’s coal and her culture were suitable for industrialization. A landscape as perfect for the appearance of the steam engine as had been the Indus valley with its climate, water and grain for civilization and settlements thousands of years earlier. Savery, Newcommon and Watt were all English. These creators of engines were rooted in coal and trellised on already busy machine shops that could build valves and tight fitting pistons. If agriculture needs sun, soil, and water the stream engine needed coal, machine shops, tinkerers, and adventures backed by capital. The exact ingredients for “progress” will be disputed. Some say “never again” while most wish to sustain these conditions. Crosby goes on to discuss achievements of modernity which may be confused with science. What are we to make of oil, coal nuclear fission? What are the prospects for fusion? Are we happy to have the A-bomb, the H-bomb? Certainly we are delighted with electricity. Children of the Sun in 2002 could hardly have predicted what would soon follow, one of man’s greatest accomplishments the inexpensive PV panel. These may as well transform mere dreams into solid gold as they silently, and motionlessly transform sunlight to electricity.

I anticipated Crosby examining energy retreats as well as advances, but in vain. We may have to wait another generation for this discussion. Why do we “Children of the Sun” give up traditional simple good uses of the sun as fast as we develop new? Why take down the superior clothesline and ask our tired, overworked electric help to do what a clothes line does better? Why leave electric lights on in the day? Perhaps we are not Children of the Sun but have a different heritage involving electricity. These questions, which Crosby doesn’t consider, can be anticipated by noticing Crosby is a carrier not an explainer of this solar betrayal. In Measure of Reality Crosby’s study of modern technologies roots 1250-1600 he dwells on the mechanical clock forgetting sundials as blithely as a contemporary who forgets to turn the lights off.

My New Go-To Manual for all Things Social Entrepreneurship

Okay, so I tend to be pretty picky about these kinds of books (nonfiction, business, how-to); there's just so much "noise" in this space that it can be difficult to find high quality material, but this book is officially my go-to reference for when people ask me questions about social entrepreneurship. The author outlines the various aspects of organizing a social enterprise (what it is, legal/incorporation issues, fundraising, measuring impact, intrapreneurship) as well as the more personal-oriented aspects of social entrepreneurship (taking the entrepreneurship leap, building a career in this space, consumer habits, etc.). It covers all the major areas and gives plenty of real-world examples.

It's also written from the perspective of three rising entrepreneurs, so it's a bit more interesting than just reading your usual dry, how-to manual––and it's well-organized, so if there are only a few topics that the reader is interested in, it's easy to skim through the table of contents and find the location in the book of those topics only. Lastly, the author also makes it relevant to all sorts of people (business owners/founders, students, professors, people interesting in creating social enterprises within existing organizations) and all sorts of business (nonprofit, for profit, small, large, etc.), which makes it relatable/accessible regardless of whether you're a die-hard social entrepreneur, just getting your feet wet in this work, or merely exploring.

Great Introduction to the Social Impact Scene

As the reader quickly finds out, social entrepreneurship is a vast topic. I really can appreciate how the author is able to keep it from being “drinking from a firehose” and presenting the material in a self-contained manageable volume. What makes this possible is a great format in following three very interesting characters looking to start a social enterprise. The book, which starts out as a story, extends beyond that by dropping in tons of knowledge with qualified sources, and ends up a very credible reference. You can tell a lot of research went into it especially in the areas of legal structure, fundraising, and the global scene for social impact. I think this is a great introduction and provides the framework for anyone wanting to enter the space.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the book as a curious reader who hopes one day to enter the social impact scene. Additionally, as a relatively newer topic in entrepreneurship, there doesn't seem to be much material available to help guide, making this book all the more necessary and valued. This would be a great addition to Business school curriculum.

This is a FANTASTIC guide to the world of social entrepreneurship. When I first read the example Parekh structures the book around (getting healthy, affordable food to low-income people living in "food deserts"), I thought: 'In the absence of a billionaire investor bankrolling the project, how would you even go about doing that?!' Now I know! She provides a step-by-step narrative--complete with trial and error--showing one real-world way that it could be done. That's my favorite thing about this book: It offers practical, down-to-earth advice you can really use. If you're thinking about social entrepreneurship, do yourself a favor and read this book and keep it as a reference. It's jam-packed with everything you need to know--and it's incredibly inspiring, as well!

Slightly outdated but good for the price

This is a pretty okay book to have in your power supply design library. Yeah it's outdated a bit, but the second edition is not too bad, especially considering the low price of used copies. The second edition has a section on mag-amps, which was a pleasant surprise.

Books on Switching converter technology tend to be very dense from the beginning, overwhelming the reader with equations before even understanding topologies. This books bridges the gap as it does just that, start slowly and methodically explaining the basics and developing the analysis in that fashion. It is a great way to start understanding deeply before you break out the equations and attempt your first prototype.

About the Author
Sharleen L. Kato, Ed.D. loves teaching as well as learning. She is a professor at Seattle Pacific University where she encourages students to become creative and successful in their chosen career field. She believes that the mission of family and consumer sciences is the key to a myriad of meaningful and fulfilling careers. Dr. Kato has taught undergraduate students for over 25 years. She currently serves as the Family and Consumer Sciences Department Director. Dr. Kato holds a doctorate in education, a master's in human ecology, and an undergraduate degree in home economics. She travels extensively spending at least two weeks each year serving in an orphanage, teen home, and prenatal clinic in the Philippines. Janice G. Elias is professor emeritus at Youngstown State University where she previously served as professor of family and consumer sciences, chairperson of the Department of Human Ecology, assistant provost for academic planning, and interim dean of the College of Health and Human Services. Dr. Elias has taught family and consumer sciences in middle school, high school, and adult education settings and continues to teach part-time at the college level. She earned her undergraduate and master's degrees from Ohio University, a doctoral degree in human ecology from the Ohio State University, and a certificate in higher education management from Harvard University. Her particular interest is the interaction of family life and work life. She is a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Kappa Omicron Nu, and Phi Upsilon Omicron.

Great insight - horrible truth

Everyone with a child in school NEEDS to be aware of the differences in education that exist in the US. Only when we look with open eyes into the tragic abyss, may we become ready to sacrifice in order to change. Two teachers I know were influenced to teach in integrated schools because of this book. It is depressing, real, and also inspiring.

Book for Urban Education class

I bought the book for an Urban Education class. It was a good read and recommend it for those not educated on urban education. It gives first hand accounts of schools that no one would want their child going to. It also gives accounts of good schools in similar areas. Truly eye opening to third world environments within the U.S.

Very well written.

I am in a social determinants of health class for nursing school and this book was on a list of books I could choose from to do a book report. What a fantastic read! It is well written, descriptive, articulate, and painful. What a horrible state of affairs for some of these schools. I would like to see if any improvements have been made since this book was written. I am so grateful to people that do this kind of research and make this kind of effort to let the world know what is going on in our towns.
