About the Author
Baltasar Gracián was born in 1601 in Belmonte, Aragon and entered the Society of Jesus in 1619. Teaching in Jesuit colleges across the Kingdom of Aragon, he was also at one time confessor to the viceroy of Aragon and chaplain to the Spanish army. But it is as one of the great Spanish stylists and moralists that he is best known. He wrote a series of short moral tracts marked by their elliptical, epigrammatic style, as well as a three volume allegorical novel, The Critic (1651-57). Published in 1647, The Pocket Oracle and Art of Prudence influenced the vogue for the form in France, and was quickly translated into the major European languages.

Jeremy Robbins is Forbes Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of numerous studies on Spanish Baroque culture and a General Editor of the Bulletin of Spanish Studies.

Some like Niccolo, but I favor Baltasar

I have friends who read The Prince like a bible, and its true that Machiavelli is worthy of repeated study, both as a period piece and window into the Renaissance Italian soul, and as possibly the most notorious treatise on Realpolitik ever written. Machiavelli, like Nietzsche, has been misused by the unscrupulous and decried by the ignorant; also, IMHO, both writers were actually better historians and analysts than they were philosophers per se.

Baltasar Gracian, in the Pocket Oracle, has accomplished what Niccolo never could, nor would have wanted to: a day to day primer of sage advice from a trained Jesuit mind who walked and worked in the highest halls of power in his time. The lessons are pithy and epigrammatic, both simple yet deserving of deep reflection and consideration and, most importantly, are eminently USEFUL in almost every interpersonal interaction in your day to day life, whether you are a dish washer or a senator -- his teachings are that universal.

Robert Greene strip-mined Gracian for 48 Laws of Power, but again IMHO, it's always best to refer back to the seminal source even after being presented with a good a digest as Greene presented. This is the Penguin edition, so you of course have the value added of their wonderful introductions, with historical references anchoring Gracian's life and the impact of the Oracle itself. Also, this translation is, I feel, much better than those I've seen marketed under the variant title Art of Worldly Wisdom.

I read this book everyday. I recommend it to every man woman or child that wants to live their very best. Gracian was one of the wisest men who ever lived, and this is the free distillation of his wisdom.

A Manual of Wisdom for all Times in the Bedroom or the Boardroom

Review of: "The Pocket Oracle and Art of Prudence" by Baltasar Gracian. Baltasar Gracian was a Jesuit teaching in colleges across the Kingdom of Aragon in addition to being the confessor to the viceroy of Aragon and chaplain to the Spanish army at the siege of Lleida. His later fame was premised on his being considered one of the great Spanish stylists and moralists of the mid-seventeenth century. The Pocket Oracle and Art of Prudence was published in 1647. It was based upon Gracian's own experiences and consists of a collection of three-hundred aphorisms offering "pragmatic, hard-headed and coldly calculated advice" on how to thrive in the cut-throat world of Baroque society. Each of the three-hundred units in the book consists of an initial aphorism/maxim followed by a commentary. For example, [aphorism] 267: "Silken words, and Mild Nature: Arrows pierce the body, but harsh words the soul. A pill can make your breath smell sweet, and to know how to sell air is one of life's subtlest skills. Most things are bought with words, and they're enough to achieve the impossible. All our dealings are in the air, and the breath of a prince greatly inspires. So your mouth should always be full of sugar to sweeten your words so that they taste good even to your enemies. The only way to be loved is to be sweet-natured." This book is comparable to Machiavelli's "The Prince," Benvenuto Cellini's "Autobiography," and Baldesar Castiglione's "The Book of the Courtier" but is much more useful in illuminating the human condition of how and why we act the way we do. As applicable today as when written and very masterfully composed. The only caveat to the reader is that it may remind him or her of many people they know, perhaps even themselves. Recommended as a guide to navigate through the corridors of power; the boardroom or the bedroom, it is a must have. Recommended without hesitation or reservation at five+ stars.

How To Conquer the World, Courteously

This is not a story, but an excellent example of the "pocket mirrors", little books of advice for leaders and princes going back to the Middle Ages. Balthasar Gracian was a Jesuit, and as many Jesuits of his time, rubbed shoulders with the elite and powerful far and wide. Jesuits are Catholic priests, considered the "marines of the Church", and thus are painfully practical, educated men, deeply dedicated to understanding the way things work, in order to reveal the most effective strategies for missionaries and workers of GOD. This book primarily focuses on personal improvement, self-discipline, courtly manners and courtesy, and influencing the movers and shakers of the world. Considered perhaps too concerned with the material world, many of Gracian's books were frowned upon by his superiors, not because they were bad advice or lead anyone astray, but because they were primarily concerned with worldly matters of state and state craft, rather than the spiritual realms.

Berufsgruppen oder Schichten und vereint eine Vielzahl von einzelnen und unterschiedlichen Mobilitätsprozessen, die meist in einem recht engen Zusammenhang miteinander stehen. Es kann unterschieden werden in Generationen- und Karrieremobilität, horizontale und vertikale, individuelle und kollektive Mobilität, die auch als Struktur- und Zirkulationsmobilität bezeichnet werden.
Generationenmobilität oder auch intergenerationale Mobilität beschreibt einen Schicht-wechsel in der Generationenfolge von der Eltern- auf die Kindergeneration. Karrieremobilität - intragenerationale Mobilität - hingegen meint einen Positionswechsel im individuellen Lebensverlauf. Diese Arten von Mobilität werden für die vorliegende Arbeit von zentraler Bedeutung sein, da beide einen Beitrag zur Veränderung der Sozialstruktur leisten.[...]

This Book really makes you take a good look at yourself

For everyone out there that spreads any kind of negativity about Scientology or L. Ron Hubbard obviously has not even taken the time to read ANY of his books. Self Analysis makes the reader take a real good look at themselves and discover what things are holding them back from reaching their full potential. This book is absolutely wonderful, I would recommend everyone to read it and give it a chance.

Note to anyone that has heard any negativity about Scientology. I highly urge those of you that have any negative thoughts about Scientology to do the following: Read Dianetics, Self Analysis, The Fundamentals of Thought and What is Scientology?. Just because a group of people said that Scientology is a cult and all they are after is your money; doesn't mean it is true. You can say that about any religion, but it does not make it true. Do not believe all the negativity that the media has put out there about Scientology and Scientologists. Scientology is all about helping others, and making the world around us a better place to live.

About the Author
DWAYNE D. GREMLER, Bowling Green State University, received his MBA and PhD degrees from Arizona State University. He is a passionate advocate for the research and instruction of services marketing issues. He has served as Chair of the American Marketing Association’s Services Marketing Special Interest Group and has helped organize services marketing conferences in Australia, The Netherlands, France, and the United States. He has been the recipient of several research awards and while a professor at the University of Idaho, Dr. Gremler received the First Interstate Bank Student Excellence in Award for teaching, an award determined by students in the College of Business and Economics.

MARY JO BITNER serves as Academic Director for the Center for Services Leadership at Arizona State University. Dr. Bitner was a founding faculty member of the Center for Services Leadership created for the study of services marketing and management. Dr. Bitner has published more than 50 articles and has received a number of awards for her research in leading journals, including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing, International Journal of Service Industry Management, and Academy of Management Executive. She has consulted with and presented seminars and workshops for numerous businesses. In 2003, Dr. Bitner was honored with the Career Contributions to the Services Discipline award by the American Marketing Association’s Services Special Interest Group. 

Valarie Zeithaml is the Roy and Alice H. Richards Bicentennial Professor of Marketing and Associate Dean for the MBA Program at the Kenan-Flagler Business School of the University of North Carolina.

Great collection of essays that needed more editing

If you've found your way here, chances are you already know a bit about Walter Benjamin, so I won't spend much time talking about his work in this review. Suffice it to say, however, that Benjamin's writings, even more than those of other cultural theorists (heck, more than those of most other writers) become more rewarding the more widely you read through them. As he might say, each particular work is like an individual piece of a mosaic - put them together and the orchestrated whole is (much, much) greater than the proverbial sum of the parts.

In light of this, a general overview of Benjamin's work for the invested beginner is an essential aide, and in English-language criticism this book is one of the best commonly available sources you'll find (the forthcoming translation of Uwe Steiner's book, "Walter Benjamin: An Introduction to His Work and Thought," promises to be a valuable counterpoint to this collection). The essays are all by well-known critics of Benjamin's writings - as far as I can tell, only Susan Buck-Morss is missing, but at least she already wrote her own book - so you don't need to worry about being steered wrong here. Personally, I found the essays on language and mimesis (Hanssen), cultural history (Caygill), Romanticism (Comay), and Benjamin's relationships with Brecht and the Frankfurt School (Nägele), as well as the introduction, particularly illuminating. Only the essay on Benjamin and psychoanalysis seemed lacking (if you have to use psychoanalysis to explain why Benjamin didn't use much psychoanalysis, maybe it's time to throw in the towel) - though in all fairness, I'm not much a fan of psychoanalytic theory myself, so take this complaint with a grain of salt.

My only criticism of this volume - and the only reason I withheld a star - is that it really seems to have been rushed through the press, or at least not carefully edited. I spotted a few typos here and there, which ordinarily wouldn't be an issue. However, some of these typos involve references to collections of Benjamin's essays, and if a reference points you to volume 1 of the Selected Writings, but should have pointed you towards volume 2, that could be a problem, especially in Benjamin's case. Besides, it just seems rather careless. If you're reading this, however, I'm guessing you have Benjamin's Selected Writings (published by Harvard's Belknap Press, vols. 1-4) either available or close at hand, so just keep your tables of contents at the ready for easy reference and it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Somewhat more annoyingly, the index is only partially helpful in locating discussions of individual works. For example, I was particularly interested in The Origin of German Tragic Drama while reading through this collection, but while the index doesn't cite any mention of it past page 67, Caygill's essay on Benjamin and cultural history (pp. 73-96), as I found out, has much to say on this particular work.

On the bright side, as I've mentioned already, the real benefit to this volume is the general overview that it gives of Benjamin's writings, so the best idea is to read it cover to cover, which means you'll get to find all the important bits yourself. As long as you're ready for these editorial mishaps, this book should serve you very well.
