About the Author
When I was seven, I got lost in the woods behind the trailer park I was living in. It took me several hours to get home, and I felt like strange lights were following me. When I got home and told my parents about the experience, they did what parents do-they dismissed it. That never happened again, but it always made me wonder. What's really out there? Is anything out there, and what would happen if instead of it finding us, what if we went and found it? I have never been able to shake the experience from my mind, and when I grew up, I figured I might as well write about it. If you can't believe me in the real world, maybe someone can in the fantasy world. Daniel McClean, 33, was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and loves pop music, anime, swords, axes, collectibles, and any movie with a happy ending. He isn't fond of endless political babble or living in Dallas, Texas.

Okay textbook

This book served as the textbook for my advanced inorganic chemistry class in college. Inorganic chemistry may be inherently difficult. That being said, I do not feel that Miessler was a particularly apt guide in navigating the byzantine intricacies of subjects like Molecular Oribital Theory. I found myself having to re-read passages, to parse out important points. The integration of these points into the body of knowledge at large felt to me to be a charge which Miessler expects the student to bear. That is to say, the text can at times feel fragmentary, devoid of the holistic picture, what I reckon the systematic nature of scientific knowledge.

That being said, I really do not know of any better text books on the subject.

Book is in BAD condition. The book in it self is ok, it has good and to the point explanations. I was scareed that whem i used the book it would fall apart. They should say that in the book description when you rent.

Inorganic chemistry is an interesting class, and this book is much cheaper to rent or buy than the newest 5th edition. The only draw back is that you need the solutions manual (which sells separately).

POTUS cousins

This was exactly what I wanted, a bit more than I was expecting. I previewed an older version from the Public Library, so I knew what was coming. The previous, apparently hand drawn to print Presidential relationship charts had been nicely upgraded into regular print flowcharts. Good bibliography citing sources. Anyone who thinks they are related to a president can search the name index for a possible connection. I have found six presidential (distant) cousins so far.

About the Author
Philip Kotler, widely considered to be the world's leading marketing guru, is the S.C. good but not great

This book tries to cram too much into each chapter, often breezing over incredibly deep topics in a way that is only confusing.

For instance, one chapter on data analysis mentions linear regression but doesn't speak at all to what it is. If I had not taking a Quant course recently I would have been completely lost.

This seems to happen the most frequently at the ends of chapters. It seems as if they cover all the main points and then Kotler et. al try to cram all their other little notes and tidbits into overly dense paragraphs just before concluding.

Also if you're a student who has to take the accompanying tests created by Prentiss Hall, expect the questions to come literally word for word from the test, rather than asking concept questions. I felt like I was back in gradeschool.

On the plus side, the book constantly gives breakout examples of the topic being discussed as applied in real life to actual businesses. Where many texts would continually reference the same handful of examples, the companies featured in this book vary widely in size, industry, and other features, giving a good, broad look at marketing as a whole, not just in the US but globally.

"Nothing is any one thing really, and isn't that the beauty of it all?"

Above all this book is about the world of women in the arts. Otto introduces the reader to the world of photography and it's inherent ambiguities. As a printed reflection of a moment in time, it would seem superficially to be more representative than other art forms. Yet we learn tha tphotography, as all art, is never just one thing.
So it is with women divided between the traditional roles of helpmate, parent , and homemaker competing with the often selfish role of artist. The girls in the book are born into worlds from the early 1900's to the present. The cameras they use vary. The settings range from the farm to pre war Berlin. They are the proverbial free woman or wife and mother. But each must master the contradictions in their worlds. Reactions to photography can be extreme, given that the nudes are demonstrably real people. Otto does a good job of leaving some judgements for us to desolate for ourselves.
Otto describes the worlds of these women in such a way that one can taste the internal conflict inherent in each. The first story presents a young mother, left to care for two children and a farm, while her narcissistic husband travels for his work. Her own photography is often caught in the bind despite her own superior credentials. I sighed, thinking here is the classic woman's story. But Otto takes it quickly into her interior world and brought me in. Cymbeline, trained in Berlin, is the first cameo, and her views reappear through this book. I think that the vignettes set in pre WWII Berlin were most bewitching to me. The frisson between the exquisite glowing world of the growth of the arts and the looming of the Nazi end of it all, plays out in the world of the girls taking pictures.
Otto notes that this is not biographical, but she did draw heavily on her researched stories of some prominent women photographers. The aesthetics she expresses read true and brought me to a new view of this art form. An interesting book to experience.

Women behind the lens

Once again, Whitney Otto has woven together, melding fact and fiction seamlessly along the way, a handful of lives in a space/time continuum where the common threads are art (specifically photography) and the role of women in society. Her subjects are fascinating both in themselves, and in their interplay. In particular, the image of the woman, once a world-traveler and now, having started a family, taking pictures only through her apartment window, haunts the reader for a long time (I can't stop thinking of The Lady of Shalott). Woman trapped...if trapped she is...not only behind a lens, but also behind a pane of glass? And yet the photographs are beautiful...is she happy with her lot?
Several of these women are recognizable as historical figures, others not. This is a glorious book, and I recommend it highly.

Life lived. And reimagined through a woman's eyes.

Amazing! This makes it as another of my favourite reads for the year. With the same appeal as Otto's How to Make an American Quilt, this is altogether bold, romantic, tender and outspoken. I loved everything about it and I could relate on so many levels, as a woman, and as someone who has always been fascinated with photography and art in general.

The novel is broken up into eight sections, each featuring a famous female photographer and her story. The obvious common thread -- photography -- is just one among the many threads that hold the individual stories together. Spanning decades (early 1990s to the present), across several continents, during various historical moments -- these themes are the stuff of our lives. I just breathed it all in! I am betting that women readers will be able to relate to one (or more) of the eight characters in some way.

Women photographers are simply ordinary women who face the issues all women do: the men (or women) who we love, fulfilling the roles expected of women (or breaking out of them), feeling comfortable in one's sexuality, children (or none at all), of wanting to carve out one's one path personally and career-wise. What makes a woman happy? What makes you happy?

What sets these eight women apart is their vision (and tempestuousness) to continue with their craft -- and do so with great courage and passion -- despite (or inspite) of the many hurdles. They all managed to make their mark in photography in rather profound ways.

Each vignette opens with a photograph which figures in the story somehow (and which I tended to flip back and forth to try and see the image through that particular photographer's eyes).

The first photographer's story opens with the photo of an unmade bed with some hairpins. Note that all these photos are apparently taken by real women photographers, and then the characters' lives are reimagined by the author based on that photo. How creative and what a wonderful way to draw readers in! Of course I want to find out who Cymbeline is, who this "woman in love" is! Of course I want to know the story behind that unmade bed. Like we always say, a picture is worth a thousand words ... in this case, the words follow.

Each has made their own distinctive mark in the world of photography -- with some extremely fascinating points woven into the narratives. There are references to photography styles and influences, lenses and cameras and details that will satisfy the photography buff. And since this draws from the lives of women photographers, there is a list at the end of the book you can check out.

Vincentian priest Gerard H. Luttenberger received his doctoral degree in Systematic Theology from Fribourg University, Switzerland, and has taught theology at the graduate level since 1966, with a specialization in Christology since 1985. He is currently Vincentian Formation Director at the Miraculous Medal House, Queens, New York, and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees at St. John's University, Queens, New York, with a specific dedication to service on the Academic Committee of the Board.

Great Basic Book on Christology

Great introduction to the study of Christology. The book is comprehensive and through. The author was a long term professor of theology at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington, NY. For a Christological textbook it is relatively easy to read and understand. Great reference book to have in a theological library.

A boring attack on faith in the guise of "scholarship"

This tedious and repetitious tome is overpriced at any cost. The "author" borrows and quotes extensively from "progressive" theologians to promote a "historical-critical " analysis of the life, mission and works of Christ. When one peels back the rambling and redundant language, we see this this is simply another instance of modernism attempting to diminish faith. As examples; miracles are called such only when "re-interpreted" in the eyes of faith; those who died may have actually only been in a coma;followers of Christ interpreted the Resurrection more from their own belief experiences rather than from evidence; and on and on. Bad enough for persons of faith to have to read such drivel, it becomes excruciating when Luttenberger-having established his offensive themes-goes on page after page to say the same thing over and over in only slightly different words.

I had to read this for a course I'm taking and will look to get it out of my house as soon as the class is done. If you are looking for a work on Christology to read to inform your faith-keep looking. If you must read a "modern" view which will attempt to apply present-day historical analysis-complete with its painful inadequacy and short-sightedness-this text will supply that need-provided you are able to stay awake.

Great material, but unreasonably verbose presentation

Ralph Ellis has done excellent research and demonstrates that historical records clearly show Jesus to have been a minor king, not a carpenter. Furthermore, he was the head of the Jewish Revolt in 66-70, not someone who was executed in year 33. So the material is most worthy and essential to read for a well-informed member of Western society. Nonetheless, the author's writing style cannot be recommended. Here is a fellow who believes in never writing one paragraph when a whole chapter will suffice. This malady is sometimes referred to as logorrhea (diarrhea of words). How many times do want to beat me on the head with the same stick?? If the reader is so thick-headed as to need this tactic, I doubt that he will pick up the book in the first place. You have to wade through close to 550 pages of text to glean what could well have been covered in 50 pages. And despite several charts of genealogy, all of them are confusing in the pivotal details, which would better have been presented in condensed form on the back cover.

A few other limitations of the work should be mentioned.
(a) Mr Ellis is a fierce proponent of secular materialism. For those of us who believe in the value of spirituality, if not religion, this is unattractive.
(b) He believes that greatly elongated heads among the Egyptian royalty necessarily had to be caused by head-binding. More enlightened studies show that these are likely to have been ETs or ET-hybrids, not head-binders. The binding theory is absurd on the basis of simple physics. There is firm evidence that the sizes (volume) of these crania are much larger than for the human population. Physics does not explain how you can compress something in order to increase its volume.
(c) Most important, Mr Ellis never explains how the Christianity founded by Saul/Josephus came to adopt Jesus as its venerated figurehead!!! He goes on for endless pages pointing out how Saul/Josephus did everything he could to make fun of Jesus and his Fourth Sect. So what's the story behind Saul's Christianity adopting Jesus as the figurehead? The reader is left completely mystified on this essential point. Maybe Mr Ellis will cover that in his next book, but I doubt that I will want to read a lot to learn a little.
(d) The last chapter is a shrill attack on the Islamic religion and its politico-religious leaders. Regardless what you may feel about Islam, this is out of context for a book on the life of Jesus, who I believe even Mr Ellis will concede was dead long before the birth of Mohammed.

If after reading the book, you wonder who Mr Ellis is, you will continue to wonder. It is not clear if this is the real name of the author or a pseudonym, but, in any case, very little biographical information seems to exist. Finally, as usual, the publisher, Adventures Unlimited Press (= David Hatcher Childress) has done a sloppy job. Mr Ellis clearly delivered a manuscript with color illustrations which Childress reproduced solely in b/w. As a result, much of the illustrative material is illegible, since the shades of grey do not suffice to reveal the details.

Must have book in everyone's library

Ralph Ellis is one of the most important writers in history and is research continues to evolve as he continues his search for truth. In my opinion his research exceeds in its conclusions that of Atwill or Thiering in that Ellis is able to see the forest AND the trees. His latest book, a sequel, is his best and most important work yet. As a scholar who spent over 25 years from 1982 on the same trail, I agree with his conclusions previously that Saul/Paul and Johanen ben Zakkai are also Josephus. But this book goes farther than my own research so far and I think he is right that we must look to Edessa and Manu V and Manu VI to see the historical Jesus and James. This book should be on the shelf of every library and home.

Lots of information. The writer is very well versed in his subject matter but all of the details makes it hard to leave and come back to without having to review what you already read in order to catch up and move on. I commend his detail but I just couldn't keep it all straight from one reading to the next. It's great information and I suspect all true but I had to put it aside for a few months...maybe when winter comes and I am snowed in.
